Just wondering how everyone gets the horses fit for hunting, i.e. how many weeks of walk trot etc and how long for.

Currently in the process of getting a cob fit for hunting (although very late but is what client wants), who was in very light work, and would be good to hear what people thought on what to level him up to. He's 15 :)

He is currently being ridden every day apart from weekends and doing 30mins to 1hours work each time at brisk walk, bit of uphill trotting and a canter up a nice hill, and still coming back chirpy :)

TIA x

Mine is ridden about 5 times a week. We have a farm ride on our yard which is fab as I can give him some fast/hill work, do that about twice a week, 2 longish roadwork rides a week (about 6 miles I think) and then 1 day in the school where I make myself do 30 mins of making us work hard.

Depends what kind of hunt it is but I hunt with the Meynell which is a bit intense. I haven't done any cubbing so he'll just have short days for the first couple. I took him to the Rockwood Harriers opening meet on Saturday though and he was fine but they have much shorter days and less galloping around (but lots of jumping!). x

My boy is 14, gets fit fairly easily.

4 weeks of walk for an hour and a half (marched along in a contact) and then steady trotting up hill 6 days a week. After a couple weeks they canter up the gallops. During the season they are worked over an hour til Christmas and canter once a week. After Christmas they do a bit less. They all get a bit of schooling and jumping mixed in once season starts too.
