sorry asked this last night but didnt get many replys, after vet saying i should try ab on a joint supplement for her cricky arthritic bones i'd like to hear your opinions on the best ones?
I use NAF Superflex- seemed to work for Buster though I was using it more as a preventative measure! He hasn't been on it for the past couple of months though as he seems to loosen up in warmer weather!
I use Superflex to on my two boys.
One who is 12 has spavins in one hock and Superflex has made such a big difference. I used to feed cortaflex , with no result, then someone told me it was mainly alfalfa!
I have noticed that he finds it much easier to bend the leg when i pick out his hooves andhe is working really nicely. (hes at advanced level dressage)
My other horse is a baby who is on it as he has weak stifles and the msm in Superflex aparantly is really good for soft tissue support.
Ideally you need something with glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate (plus msm if such a product exists!) I dont know about all the different trade names, but a bit of googling should get your answer. You'll want the purest stuff with highest doses ( and dont fall for any of this 'ground up shark cartliage' rubbish as horses cannot digest it!)
EquiFlex from Vet Vits - good price and vegetarian - recommended to me by instructor at Yorkshire Riding Centre (Chris Bartle's place, for you sartharners
i use cortaflex for 1 of mine and have for the last 10 years, i tryed takin him off to try the vetvits equiflex but then he went lame so i put him back on cortaflex. it works brilliantly 4 him, but obviously every horse is different.
I researched joint supplements until I was blue in the face. My vet used to recommend Synequin (most vets do!) but it is VERY expensive. Then I discovered Riaflex Complete - http://www.riaflex-equine.co.uk/product_riaflex_complete.htm - which has a slightly better spec than Synequin and is a third of the price. It definitely saved the life of my husband's old HW hunter (who was on Cortaflex for years before being diagnosed with high articular ringbone causing severe lameness!)
The old boy has done 2 full seasons since then! I've recommended it to a lot of people and most have been very happy with the results. (A couple complained that their old veterans started bucking - although I would consider that a GOOD sign!)
I used Newmarket joint supplement but didn't find it anymore expensive than any of the others. I think it was about £32 for a 500g pot inc postage from www.furrypharm.com. You only need a tiny sprinkle so it seemed to last ages
