Hiya,

my mare is a little stiff in her hind legs, (her back, teeth and saddle have been done and all sorted), so I was thinking about getting her a suppliment.

I heard that the majority are designed for older horses, is there one that is best for younger horses? Or is it best to just give her a smaller amount of one for older horses?

She's not robotic stiff, but it is noticable.

Thank you :)

If the horse is 8 and I assuming insured I would be inclined to have a vet visit and discuss getting a complete vet lameness work up done to see if there is any underlying reason why she is stiff.
You say in the post that it is noticable .If it has been going on for some time I would be talking to the vet .
I would be inclined to do it sooner rather than later as the more established a condition is the harder it is to treat and damage that is irreversible can be done.
Just m opinion.

If you can get your vet to support a prescription Cosequin is absolutely amazing!!

If you are buying off the shelf (or don't want to fork out £90/mth for Cosequin  ) Premierflex HA from Equine Answers is also fab.

From personal experience I couldn't recommend Cortaflex or NAF Superflex as neither made the slightest bit of difference to my 4yr old when he injured himself and needed a supplement to support his recovery.

I have put my mare on Cosequin (as advised by the vet) and it hasn't made the slightest bit of difference.

I discussed with my vet about putting her on Turmeric and he said he couldn't see any reason not to. I noticed a difference with a week of her going on it.

So, for the moment, she is still on both. Once the insurance runs out, she will no longer be on Cosequin.

Sorry to hijack OP :o ... Quirky can I ask what is wrong with your horse (ie why you need a supplement?) My lad came good on it by the end of the loading dose so I genuinely thought it was a miracle product :)

She has been diagnosed with pre-arthritic fetlocks in both fronts at the tragically young age of 4 :(.

Its not a specific thing for joints but maybe think of adding some micronised linseed, you can get it from equimins or charnwood millings do it. It has all omega oils and is good for joints as well as giving my horse a lovely shiney coat :-)
Vetvits do a joint supp that a friend of mine swears by. There are so many different supplements but some times is just a case of finding which is best for your horse. If she was mine I would prob get the vet to check it out and if the stiffness goes once she has been moving around maybe try and increase the amount of turn out she gets.

Vetvits Equiflex.

ou have to buy it direct from them and they deliver it to your doorstep. It is much more economical than any of the decent supplement you buy off the shelf (in fact it's ingredients are almost identical to Cosequin and when my friends horse insurance ran out, her vet was more than happy for her to use it).

I have used it and recommended it to lots of different horses and have seen results in all of them.

Tried cortavet, then cosequin at great expense over 2.5 years making the vet rich and me poor, and none of it made a damn bit of diffference

Barefoot and two mugs of linseed meal each day did the trick.
