OH and I our looking to get our first dog at the end of February, we plan to attend training classes and as of yet we're undecided if we're getting a puppy or an adult.

So... what do I need to read before we delve in?!

Books, DVD's, websites, forums. The less costly the better as we're moving house so spending a small fortune on that as well!

She's pretty, as lurchers appeal have a nosey on Lurcher Link and most breeds have their own forums too.

Dogmantics/kikopup has some good clicker training videos. On training- You can usually go along to watch a training class before signing up to make sure your happy with trainers methods. I didn't realise that first time and was glad at least i hadn't already paid as they were awful.

If you live near a library could have a look what they've got in as a free option, ours has an ok dog section though sometimes the good books are out already.

I used to work on a stud farm and the owner had four GSDs, I was only there 6 months but I learnt more about dogs in that time than I could ever learn from a book. Before I started I had no idea dogs could be so well behaved, I think I would be far more tolerant of bad behaviour if I hadn't worked with those dogs. All four of them used to wait for me to open the gate to their paddock and invite them through rather than barging past so they could play, I was gobsmacked when I first started!! So, what I'm saying is that spending time with well trained dogs and owners is probably one of the best ways to learn!!

Some good suggestions on here, if you decide to get a specific breed do your research, see what they are prone to and check the breeder has health tested both parents.

It would also be a good idea to look at insurance beforehand rather than wait until you have your puppy/dog and then its not a rush. Whatever you decide on food wise, again more research and pick the best one thats affordable to you.
