Fed up of replacing fly rugs my yongster has trashed 2 in the past month so need to find a good quality rug that will last more than a month. So what brands do you recommend?
if you can track down a old rambo orginal fly rug (the green mesh one) they last forever, my youngster is trying very hard to wreck it but its on its 2nd summer (she is turned out with to big horses and another youngster) and still going strong!
I think the derby house ones are really fab for the money - mine are onto their second summer now with rubbing rolling horses to put them through their paces! They still look brand new after a wash. They often have them on special offer which makes them even more of a good deal.
It badly rubbs my poor horse in places that no other rug has ever rubbed before.
The ear holes are too close together, putting pressure on his poor little ears.
The heavy cotton material makes him sweat like mad in warm weather, and although it's dense cotton material, because the rug is designed to be so close fitting, the horseflies can still easily manage to bite him through it.
Not impressed. I usually love anything by Horseware but not this. A big thumbs down. And... to add insult to injury it's one of the most expensive fly rugs on the market, so I've sort of blown my budget for a while.
If you can get one, a Pagony Sweet Itch hoody is fab: I got mine from Robinson's sale in the Autumn (not sure if they've got any now tho' - blimmin typical, you can never getta sweet itch rug when you need it - RANT!!).
If you're going down the Boett road, then don't be tempted by imitations: I've got a Pagony (was recommended it by a friend) but the workmanship is rubbish and all the seams started coming undone so I then had to get the poor old sewing machine out and get sewing!
Have got a Premier Equine hoody/sweet itch rug: last years fitted brilliantly, this year's (same size ordered) came up a tad smaller for some reason so check the size you need. Seems to do the job OK, but you might need more cover under the tummy.

Thanks glad you said they were no good was going to get one for my other mare as her boett has been fixed but id say only has a years life left in it now. May as well save up and buy a new boett.
