Hi,
My horse's tail has lost nearly all of its hair caused by trauma from a tail bandage. Has anybody else had this issue before? His hair has just fallen out and has left most of the bottom of his dock bald. He has probably lost around 80/90% of his tail and I need it back for the next showing season! What are the best remedies for mane and tail regrowth?

Megatek is good, however in your case tail bandage damage is often permenant, or sometimes grows back white as the roots themselves are also damaged. Seems he is lucky not to have lost his tail.

I like Supreme mane abd tail rebuilder

One of the reasons why i think these products have a mixed review by people is that they use them differently

I honestly think you could use any mane and tail conditioner and as long as you massage it in well i think you'd get a result. Im sure its the massage that does the trick more than the product

Wish you the best of luck with the tail, hope it isn't permanently damaged.

Agree with poster above who said that it may be the massage that works as much as anything but I'm a sucker and am trying to get a small rub on one flank to grow back so have brought a few of these products.

Haven't found megatek any good.

Trying the supreme mane and tail rebuilder at the moment but too early to say, also trying the supreme black makeup as I've heard the matt black one works wonders on sweet itch, only have the slightly glossy black one myself but will let you know if any miracles occur.

I'm sure a few people will mention Cornucrescine but can't comment as never tried it.

My two cents anyway

I've just looked at megatek and its says its also good for hooves- is this correct? And how do you apply it, is it a spray or lotion?

i mix mine up with water in an old spray bottle and spray on baldy spots/in to roots of tail twice a week and rub in.

i do think mega tek helps a bit, but it does make the mane a bit greasy so you will need to wash mane a couple of times a week too, then re apply.

Its comes in what can only be compared to a shampoo bottle! Its a lotion type stuff that is similar to hair conditioner expect a little thicker - I would say its like a hand cream type lotion, thick and creamy. I dont wash the mane a few times a week either! I just lash it on & brush it through & it absorbs really well but I would wash it out if I was plaiting cause it would make it too slippy :)

jasmine04, I've got a nearly full bottle of Megatek you can have if you want to try it? Am happy to post to you. I don't need it for my new horse.

I put Megatek on neat, but it is quite sticky so if the rubbing is caused by a rug etc it can make it worse -put some coat gloss on over the top and make sure that the rug, neck cover etc is clean.
It is brilliant for injuries when healed as it really makes the coat grow back more quickly. On the hooves I would put it on the coronets to encourage growth, like we used to with cornucrescine!

Thanks for all of the replies.
I think im lucky in that the hairs haven't come out by the roots and are already growing back. The Vet said his tail will grow back; it will just take time. He also has a white tail so the hair colour wont change. He doesn't have any skin irritation at all and his tail was not wet when bandaged and it wasn't tight so I was really not expecting this.

I am worried though about showing him as I am going to have to invest in a false tail when there is enough hair to attach it to. He is a real HOYs potential and was really looking forward to the next showing season so i am really gutted.
Also a question on wether it would effect his value as i was offered a considerable amount of money for him this year and turned it down. He has not been affected in any way other than his annoyance of not being able to swat the flies away so hes in a full sweet itch rug!

I use good old baby oil. I heard about from my farrier, laughed at the advice and then tried it a few months later only to eat my hat!
