Bit of a numpty question - whats the best length of mane to get nice small easy to do plaits? I dont like short manes but need to be able to plait easily. Both boys definatley have them too long at the moment and plaits are a nightmareta

My ideal length is about 3 inches, it needs to be thin enough and the neck to be fairly narrow on top to go into easy quick plaits, I have one who has the perfect mane about 10 mins to put in 10 plaits this morning, another takes far longer because his neck is wider and the mane is coarse, however much I pull it there is no hope of it ever being easy to plait and it never looks really smart even done with thread.

depends what style of plait you want, if you want small eventer/showing type plaits then 2.5-3 inches and thin.

i do the big fat dutch dressage plaits, so get 6/7 plaits per horse, mane is about 5/6 inches long, and thick. very easy and very quick to do.

I didnt even know there were different types of plait! I just plait whats there. We only do unaffiliated stuff - dressage and ODEs - where we need to plait but I was thinking of doing hunter class and riding club horse with them. .....................Riding club horsey has long thinish neck and hunter horsey is ID with a really heavy neck possibly from being a driving horse in the past.
