Been meaning to get some for a while for polo schooling and because her old owner recommended getting some as she overreaches sometimes. She pulled a shoe out hacking at the weekend (wasn't loose before) so I assume she trod on the back of it.

Our mare has super sensitive skin due to UV photosensitivity which is currently under treatment and improving nicely so I wanted to get some advice please before I purchase. Are fleece lined tops better or does the dirt clog up in fleece and make them rub even more than plain neoprene? Any recommendations of styles/brands that you know to be good? How tight should I do them to prevent rubbing? Is looser better or will it rub more due to rotating round?

She is a little ex racer 15.2hh-ish with stick legs! Thanks in advance.

I used the sheep-skin ones on my sensitive skinned tb, although he had no skin issues his old ones rubbed him raw.
The were fine, I'd advise getting a couple of pairs because they do get mucky so you have a pair whilst the others are washed, but mine washed really well and lasted for ages. The boot fell apart before the sheepskin with him constantly catching it! :)
The other option is to get to ones that screw into stud holes on the shoes... I have a pair of these but have never used them, they don't actually touch the skin but cup around the heels and under the shoe. They might also be worth a look.

Thanks Anna; I have seen those screw on things but I don't really want to go down stud hole route unless necessary later on in summer if our polo plans happen on our mini budget! Don't really jump her much yet either.

Is there a particular brand of fleecy ones you have used and found to be good? I have to have her bandaged to keep legs away from UV light whenever outside so just one more thing to wash... sigh...!

Yes my cuffed boots rub boo. Must grab those boots from horse health. I have hkm fleece boots but I think the boot will get savaged soon. Maybe the le m fleece cuffed boot would be another great option?

Le Mieux sounds expensive if anything like the saddle pad we got on advice of saddler... It is lovely though! I can see fleece ones being ok in summer when dry but having spent all winter rinsing out mud crusted fleecy bandages I'm not sure how practical they would be?

Just thought I'd update this for anyone else with similar issues; I got the Le Mieux neoprene plain boots as suggested by KatB as decided that fleece collared ones might trap more dirt and cause worse issues and be a nightmare to keep clean. The Le Mieux ones were not very expensive and so far have used twice for long hacks on varied terrain and no issues with rubbing so I am very pleased with them - thanks to all who took the time to reply!

Hi- I have also had my or boots rub in the past, causing a very sore horse!! I don't put them on him unless I absolutely have to, such as we're off XC. The other thing I do is rub Vaseline on the back of the Pastern in the hope that he gets some sort of protection!
