Best pickup for towing and in general

I was originally going to buy a jeep cherokee/grand cherokee for towing. However, I am training as a plumber and I think a pickup would be most practical for work as I can easily shove radiators and bathrooms etc in the back. I have a 17hh warmblood so it needs to tow heavy weights as well.

This site is pretty good but it would be nice to have impartial comments based on real experience! Thanks

I know you said pick up but i don't think you can beat the landcruiser, it tows our 18hh and 17.2hh with no problems and is a complete workhorse.
 
I've got a 55 plate L200 and it's great. I like having the 'boot' separate from the cab - not more hay, mude etc in the car. Also when the dogs are in the back it doesn't matter so much if they are carsick because we in the car don't have to see it or smell it!

Also got a 55 plate Jeep Grand Cherokee for sale if you want?
 
Thanks for the advice everyone, and thanks for the offer re the cherokee boxers but like you the idea of the boot being separate from the cab is the biggest appeal for me! I am not the tidiest of people and it will be carrying my plastering stuff etc as well and the dust goes everywhere even with the best of cleaning intentions!

I will def test drive a few different makes which will be fun

I've had a Nissan Navara for 18 months and love it! Great for chucking hay and feed in the back.
Haven't used it for towing yet, though we are looking at another trailer so it will be then.
OH has an Isuzu pick up which we used to use to tow a triple axle trailer which was fine.
(My Nissan is much better though!)
 
ive got a land rover defender double cab pick up. Its great for towing and just throw things in the back and hose it out when it gets mucky. Ive got a back on mine so i can also secure things in there if I need to.
 
We have Nissan Navara on a 56 plate (newer version which is VERY big). Its fantastic to drive and well kitted out with extras, will tow trailer so easily you'll forget its there if you're not careful!! On the downside, the back seats are VERY uncomfy for adults as they are more like bench seat set-up, very upright and weird (try them yourself if this is a consideration) and it's also a beast to park in regular supermarket type parking spaces. Ours has the tinted cab window and also tinted windows on the back top thingy so you can't see behind you very well (we have parking sensors but they aren't that helpful!)
