Best polypad type thing

Saddle fitter thinks we'd benefit from a polypad under our saddle.

I've borrowed one for the time being but obviously need to buy my own.

So, what’s the best pad for adding a bit of padding under a saddle? Yes I know fitted saddle shouldn’t need a pad but this is a tb we’re talking about and IMO a bit of softness isn’t going to kill him :? (I hope!)

Are the proper polypads the best? What other brands have people got? Different styles??

I always use a high wither numnah so was concerned this might slip down on his withers but it’s stayed nicely in place.
 
Well, mine uses polypads as a matter of course coz the yard's policy is to use them and he's on working livery, so there's always one under his saddle. Having said that it didn't stop him getting a back problem, but this was due to the fact that the yard put on a saddle which didn't fit, so not surprising in that case.

Personally I'm not keen on them, they always seem far too bulky and unweildy IMO, but I do think they're supposed to be very good for cushioning shock e.g. when jumping etc. They come in several degrees of thickness I think, so you might need to ask your saddler what thickness he/she recommends. The advantage of polypads is that they're dead easy to care for you just bung them in the washing machine.
 
I just have one of the single thickness polypads but my tb seems to like it and doesnt slip one bit :) But if I was to get another one i'd probably go for a double thickness one just for extra padding :p ... I only ever ride in a saddle cloth with sheepskin half pad or my polypad, I just have this thing about a normal saddle cloth being to thin :o ... My friend has one of the john whitaker ones and its super thick but always slips back, wheather its to do with the shape of the horse we dont no! lol

Your saddle fitter needs to be more specific and also needs to fit the saddle with the pad. Otherwise you could cause more harm than good- yes, extra padding can cause problems! If you had a pair of shoes that you wore with a thin pair of socks and then you wore a pair of thermal walking socks there would be a big difference in fit!

You could fill the gullet of the saddle with the pad and pinch the spine for a start.
