I usually apply something to my horse's feet when they come in for the night and their feet have been cleaned.

What's the best application for protecting the hooves in wet mud during the day in winter? Any recommendations?

Most things advertised still seem to be gearer toward preventing drying out.

I started using Keratex Hoof Hardener last week, on the recommendation of my farrier. My girls hooves tend to get very crumbly in the wet, then get soft and bruise easily. I've been using Keratex daily for the past week (as per instructions) and no sign of crumbling despite the wet ground we've had recently. Expensive, but the consistency is like water so you really don't use much.

I don't want to make them harder, just protect them from becoming soft from the constant wetness in winter. I use Keratex Hoof Hardener occasionally, but with care. Applying it too often, for too long, will result in the hoof becoming brittle and breaking.

I use the right step hoof dressing spray a couple of times a week as it acts as a breathable barrier, and keeps the moisture levels right apparently, theres also Keratex Hoof Gel which is specifically for protecting the feet in wet muddy conditions.
Theres also a foot dressing called Antibac which I've heard good reports about but as yet haven't tried it so don't know where you can buy from!
I still do like using the Effol green hoof ointment though and makes the feet look really nice!

Many thanks for those suggestions
