Best quite cordless clippers out there for a very nervous ISH

Hi everyone,

As the title says really. I’ve just recently bought my ISH and as it’s coming into clipping season am just wondering what quite cordless clippers are out there?
His last owners said that they use to twitch him to clip but I’d rather get him use to them!

Any help and advise would be great 😊

I use the Heineger Xplorer clippers on my difficult to clip mare. Certainly quieter than my old Lister Star clippers (as well as not having to worry about the wire). These days she just jumps when I turn them on but then settles to let me clip.

Definitely Heineger xplorer. So quiet and clip amazingly well without leaving tram lines.

Has any tried the liveryman harmony plus clippers or Liveryman Element cordless trimmers?

I have the Liveryman Element trimmers and bought them about 8 years ago specifically to clip one of our horses who, we were told when we bought him, needed vet sedation to clip. I started by giving him a low chaser clip with them, then a more extensive chaser clip and then a blanket clip. Once he was used to those I was able to graduate to Lister Libertys and now he is like dead donkey to clip! The Elements have still come in useful for a myriad of purposes since then, from clipping the dog to tidying up hairy jaws to emergency clips when the big clippers have died. I plan to use them this Autumn to clip our youngster for the first time too. It's not just the noise with the bigger clippers, it is often the level of vibration too. Obviously the downside with them being so small is that it takes twice as long to clip and if you get a really coarse hairy animal they can struggle. (For example, I can give my pony a blanket clip with them, but they won't go through the really thick hair on the top of her bottom!)

Yes both, the element is a trimmer really, I managed to do a low chaser/irish type clip with them but it isn't a great solution. They are better for heels, beards and bridlepaths really. They are quiet though and helped with desensitising.

The harmony is brilliant though, I wouldn't be without them. Easy to use for a novice clipper, quiet and cordless for a nervous horse too. They are handy for doing lines and tricky areas too. My mare is now fine to be clipped with lister star mains clippers but I use the harmony clipper for every clip to do her face, near her ears, round her elbows etc. Really recommend them.

I had the Liveryman Harmony and they were great but not really big enough to do a full clip - I did trace and blankets.

But a good tip for nervous horses is to use an electric toothbrush used to desensitise them to the noise. Once they are happy with that close to their skin you can begin at a bit more of a distance with the clippers (and bear in mind negative reinforcement - stop only when they stop, so they think they can stop the noise by standing still. Eventually they will learn to tolerate the sound and stand for it)

I bought the harmony clippers last year as my horse is dreadful with clippers. They are “ok”....took me ages to clip him as the blades aren’t as wide as standard clippers plus he was sedated, so I was up against the clock. I sold them after

Ear plugs are very good but I spent the summer desensitisating him to clippers with the Michael Peace method. Took about 6 weeks but I can now use my Heiniger Handy clippers on him ( still ear plugs though and loads of food)

I have Liveryman Harmony plus clippers, and the Heiniger Xplorers.

Both are great clippers. The harmonies are much smaller and quieter, and can take wide or narrow blades. They can cope with tricky bits and trimming well, and would be up for a full clip too, though I bring the Xplorers into use for full clips.

The Harmonies are beefy enough to easily whip the feather off my IDx cob mare. I mostly use the wide blades, but they only come in one cutting length.

Try the Michael peace method. Last year I had the most clipper phobic horse in the world .

Me too. Sometimes browsing on here can be expensive!
That said - I was able to clip my mare without sedation using these (and some practice with an electric toothbrush). Paid for themselves last winter due to not needing sedation or paying someone else to clip.

Liveryman Harmony are great - I forgot we have them as well . Only use them with the small blades which is why I didn't think about them and that means clipping takes a fair while. With wider blades, they'd be quicker and very quiet.

Another Heiniger Xplorer recommendation, although for an ISH, you may be ok with the Masterclip MD Roamer, which is VERY quiet!! I have a set of these, but my cob is like a yak and they're just not powerful enough for his ultra thick feather and fur!! The Xplorers cut through like butter, though!

I have a set of the xplorers , which were great last year for my sensitive horse, but tried to use them yesterday and they keep cutting out when turned on- motor and battery seem fine so am worried they are faulty- gutted as love them as a clipper- am trying to get hold of heiniger re warranty repair or replacement now- anyone had experience of their customer service at all ? :-(
