Would love to hear your opinions of the best combo of reins/gloves for XC in the rain.

I went XC in fairly aged (2.5 years old) Eventa reins and MacWets on Sat, and was really struggling for grip - so it's clear it's time to upgrade... Especially as my horse's attitude to rain is to try to do everything quicker so she can get home and dry!

So what do you recommend? I'm looking at Biogrip reins - are they better in the wet? And what do people use for gloves? I've always loved my Macwets, but perhaps this pair are getting a bit old and battered.

Thanks in advance, and yummy white chocolate and raspberry cookies on offer.

I dont XC but Ive found the Roeckl gloves the best for showjumping when its raining teamed with bio grip reins (the ones with the bobbles).

I do absolutely everything with bio grip reins and Roeckl gloves i love them. But have to admit after a horse stumbled in water jump xc shcooling causing a bit of a splash i definitiely lost grip for a while. A friend who hunts a lot wont use the bio grip reins because of this. She swears by the old fashioned material type rein which have a little ring of leather at regular intervals

I found my Roeckl gloves useless in wet weather! Macwets all the way for me, with either biogrip reins or even better ascot super grip reins.

Thanks for the replies - it seems like it's the reins causing the issue then...

What type of Roeckl gloves is everyone using? The XC ones or the Suprema leather-type ones?

i use the roeckel chester gloves, and biogrip reins for xc, and for hunting the same gloves and double reins (one is plain leather, and the other is only rubber on the inside).... no problems at all, and Ron pulls like a tank!

I have the bio-grip reins - not everyone loves them but I like them - nice and flexible with sticky rubber meaning they are really grippy - I use leather SJ gloves xc and the leather and sticky rubber seem to be a good combo for me

Personally I can't stand biogrip reins! Think they're a bit of a rip off...I use the roeckl thin leather type gloves with standard cheap rubber grip reins and have never had a problem with grip. I just make sure I replace the reins when the grip starts to wear down. I have quite small hands so have found most other gloves, especially xc type ones too big which makes grip rather tricky. Agree that web reins with little bands of leather around are good too, I use those as the bottom rein on my gag.

All racehorses have rubber reins as they have the best grip. It is best to have as thick as you can manage. Most jockeys use macwet gloves. If they lose grip they have probably got dirty and need washing!

I live the bio grip reins any use Neumann gloves in the wet conditions. I find I never loose bio grip reins but it's personal preference. I use ariat gloves in normal conditions they are grippy to

Bio grip reins and Neumann gloves for me, my horse pulls like a train and get very sweaty, its the only combo I can keep some sort of control, anything else just gets yanked out of my hands.
The neumann gloves are even more grippy when they get wet!
