Hi,

This is my first post on here so hello!

I am an experienced rider, I used to ride from the age of 7 until I was around 27 and I had four of my own horses. Since then, I am now 38, I have had the odd ride on holiday or at places in London where I live. I am now planning a short break to Lincolnshire - 2 nights and plan to do riding during the day. I'd quite like to hack out. Can anyone recommend a really good yard with great horses that can accommodate me for a lesson on Friday 17 October and some hacking on Saturday 18th. The cost doesn't matter and I am happy to do it all privately if need be. I will be staying at "Woodhall Spa" and I will be driving up from London and so I will have a car and can drive but due to timings I need somewhere not to far from the hotel.

Really need to book up soon and so if anyone has any suggestions that would be great.

Thanks Lou

I don't think there's an awful lot round there, I'm afraid. You're likely to have to drive towards the coast (Skegness, Chapel St Leonards...) or Lincoln. There's Castledyke near Boston - I think they do lessons and have a hacking track - and Black Cat and Orchard Farm out towards the coast. There's also a place in Scamblesby whose name escapes me. I lived in Lincolnshire for 12 years and found it dire for riding.

Whatever you decide, DO NOT go to Ivy Lane at Coningsby. Four Winds Equestrian Centre just outside of Spalding is good, I used to live/work there for 3 years and can highly recommmend, but it might be too far for you. Good luck :)

Hello,

Thank you for you replies :-). Grumpy Herbert is Lincolnshire really rubbish for riding? I'm surprise with all that beautiful countryside. What about riding over the Wolds?

Master Benedict, Do you know Brook House Farm Stables? Whats Louth like?

I lived between Boston and Skegness, and for hacking out yes, it was rubbish - no bridleways, busy country lanes with lorries and agricultural vehicles of all shapes and sizes, and huge great ditches at either side of the roads!

I went to a good place for lessons up near Louth - again the name escapes me, but it's in Muckton and is BHS registered - but there is a real lack of riding schools in general. The Wolds would be lovely to hack out on, if there was anywhere that did hacks. I would look round Horncastle/Louth for places for hacking, but I'm not sure if there are many of them.

I've also heard good things about Four Winds, if you fancy a drive down to Spalding.

hi again,

Brook House Farm is also BHS registered. I think the drive to Spalding will be too far given the time I'm there for, although i did look at Four Winds before and yes it looks good.

Just had a look at Brook House Farm, and that was the place I was thinking of in Scamblesby - it's just the other side of Horncastle. It looks like they might have some nice hacking nearby. Orchard Farm in Skegness does beach rides, if that takes your fancy. I hope you find somewhere good!

No, but I used to keep my horses up that way, between Spilsby and Skegness, and had heard of them - nothing bad, I hasten to add! I just had a look on their website, as it was bugging me not being able to remember the place in Scamblesby!! The place in Muckton is called New Farm, but I don't think they do hacking out.

Hi, I rang them and they said they have good hacking, so I have booked a 2hr hack on a 16hh 2 Irish cob he is apparently quite forward going but I haven't ridden regularly in years. Will be having a lesson the day before but it seems they are the best closest to where I am staying.

My OH treated me to a 2 hour hack at Brook House Farm a few years ago. I had a lovely hack across the Wolds - you will have fun :-)

Brook House Farm is great, lovely instructors and some nice horses. I have had lessons there and the granddaughter goes weekly. There is some lovely hacks on bridleways and onto the wolds. Have fun!

Sounds good! Have fun and let us know how it goes.

I lived in Lincolnshire for 12 years and found it dire for riding.

Lincolnshire is one of the largest counties in the country so you will excuse me for saying your experience isn't mutually felt. I like about 15miles from Woodhall Spa and have some wonderful offroad hacking nearby, great yawning grass verges and lovely quiet lanes.

Brook House have lovely hacking as Louth is an AONB and the wolds are just stunning, well worth the 30 min drive (which is also a lovely drive out that way).

I was unfortunate for 12 years then, but as I said, I lived between Boston and Skegness! The Wolds are beautiful, but the fens round my way most certainly were not, and without transport my options were limited. Are there other riding schools that do hacking up where you live, RunToEarth? I ask because I have a friend still in Boston who would be interested.

We have miles and miles of off road hacking too but I am in the North too. One reason for the lack of riding schools may well be that Lincolnshire has or had the highest rate of horses per head of any county in England and at one time in Europe so possibly difficult as most people have their own
