Are there any rugs that are particularly good for getting a sweaty/damp hairy pony dry quickly?

His fleece doesn't seem to do much good and I don't really want it getting too wet too often as it's his only "stable" rug.

Any suggestions/recommendations?

A good old fashioned cotton cooler. Thumper dries in about 20 mins after excercise and a wash down with one of these, and he's not clipped yet.

Best rug I've found is the Lidl's fleeces! They are really thin and wick even a wet through horse dry in about 20 mins - water all sits on the top - we've now bough 5 as stock

A Thermatex or similar wool cooler rug will wick the moisture away from him and keep him nice and snug but it might be a bit too warm for him if he is very wooly and you don't intend to clip him.

I never use just a rug to dry a horse, I always thatch; horse dries and is warm in no time and your rug never gets wet, sweaty or sticky.

The old ways are often the best. Thatching is much quicker than any rug on its own. If you really fancy a specialist rug then Id go for the Thermatex but they are pricey.

Another vote for Thermatex here - wouldn't be without one! (Actually I only have one but I use it on four horses - ranging from 13hh to 16hh

Thermatex again, but consider the lightweight (like jersey material) rather than the normal quilted version. Your boy looks like he would get far too hot in a normal thermatex unless he's fully clipped.

They also do a lightweight version with an extended neck now, but again probably too warm unless he's fully clipped. Normally these rugs have a single strap under the stomach at the front, but I think (for more money) you can get cross surcingles now - not necessary really on these rugs though.

Expensive but a great easy fit, stay in place, great quality, very cosy and you can put them on and forget them for the night. They are great stable rugs as well as for drying off a horse/preventing it from getting chilled. I'd wear one myself if I was a horse.

I use masta coolmasta coolers in the summer and a thicker cooler in the winter. (Clyst universal but I don't think they make them anymore). I used to have a Thermatex but it was too hot for our TB to travel in.

Thermatex, expensive but still going strong after 15 years and sooo cosy!

[/ QUOTE ] Ditto - except I have only had mine 4 years, but I fully expect it to last for more than the life of a horse

If it's warm thatch under a string vest. If it's cold thatch under a good old fashioned jute rug, 100% natural, 100% breathable and 100% warm.
