Hiya all,
I was wondering if anybody coudl recommend a rug for Bob to wear travellign back from hunting (so upto an hour), he will have warn his cooler rug and is usually nearly dry before we leave but then he gets cold on the way home when his cooler is wet.
I like the look of robinsons wool day rug or their combo fleece but i have no idea which would be best

I was going to suggest a good quality wool rug - or perhaps a thermatex. But when it really does get cold, if he's totally dry when you leave - you could put a stable rug on.

how much are you looking to spend?
I love my MT Coolex rug as it is practically the same as a thermatex but not as much money though they are still quite expensive. They are great at wicking away the moisture whilst keeping the horse warm.
My dog even has a mini one for when the weather is cold!

I have a Rambo newmarket striped rug and that seems to do the trick. I think they retail between £50-£65. Mine was £65 last year but I live on an Island and there are only 3 stores to choose from (and I wanted it there and then!). I have definitely seen cheaper on the net.

If I had the money though it would be a Thermatex

Find ripped thaermatexes- some places have them where they have rips in and things... We got ours with a rip on the shoulder, but just got some patches and it's as good as new, and only cost £30 odd, which is pretty cheap. Absolutely worth every penny, even if you go for an expensive one, because they are leagues above anything else and last a lifetime.

Thermatex rugs are more expensive than many others but well worth the money. Looked after they last for years and you cant beat them for wicking. Thermtex easily outlive and out perform cheaper rugs

Agree about Thermatex I have one that I bought in 1985 that cost me £33 and it is still on full use.!!!
You can tell they are the most popular as they rarely appear on ebay!!!

Thermatex all the way, had mine 17 years now, it still fits and does the job, not the poshest looking now, having said that when washed there's only a few little holes in the outer layer!! But would only buy another to replace it!!!

Set a search up on ebay and watch your chosen rug religiously.
I got a brand new one for £70 - just over a year ago and it is one of the best things I have ever bought.
I don't let madam wallow in her stable in it, if she is cooling off at home she's tied up, but it still looks smart enough to show in.
They also wash better than you'd think.
Remember to buy a size smaller than normal, they do stretch a bit!

Defo a thermatex type rug. Most of our hunt use them. I also have a Thermo-cell which is very similar to a Thermatex, but was half the price. They're made by Weatherbeeta.

I have an Aerborn/ Colin Cook version of the Thermatex (I forget what it is called) which was slightly cheaper and just as good (have been a thermatex lover in the past).

Tip though, the sizes come up massive and they do tend to stretch, I'd def buy one size, even 2 sizes smaller than your standard rugs.

I layer with weatherbeeta fleeces. I have 2 normal and a combo and depending on the weather layer them. They wick well through to the top layer and can be used in all weathers. I got mine new in sales for £15 each and £20 for the combo.
