best rug water proofer???

The nikwax products are good, provided you apply them correctly. Use the correct wash then the relevant proofer

I apply using a hand sprayer. Always works,

I do know some folk use brick sealant which is available from builders merchants and is supposed to be excellent. You just paint it on to a clean rug and hey presto!

had a look on ebay, nikwax sounds like a great product but abit fussy, ide never get 7" heavyweight in my washer lol

suelin i heard people use brick sealant aswell but ide be concerned it would damage breathability of the rug?

think ill just buy a new one!

Dont you have anyone who does rug cleaning near to where you live? Would be a lot easier and your right, there is no way you would fit a 7ft heavyweight into your washing machine, not without breaking it anyway!

Nikwax is very good..

Im interested in this thread! Now with 3 horses I cant afford washing and reproofing properly every year so I only send the ones that need repair and am trying to clean the others myself.
How long does a bottle last? not just for one rug? (else its cheaper to send!)

I'm using Fabsil this year. I bought a 5L can of it and am just painting it on after I've thoroughly washed and dried my TO rugs. Not sure how economical it is though, as I seem to be using about 1/4 5L can on a 6'6" medium/heavy weight turnout with neck. It works very well though.

Re: brick and masonry sealant, it says here that it's breathable - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WATERSEAL...ROST-PROTECT-COATING-/320931504156#vi-content

Not sure if all of these types of paint on sealant are 'breathable' but it makes them an interesting option if some are. Def cheaper than Fabsil for a 5L tin!

Edited to say: Just bought http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ronseal-TWSU5L-Thompsons-Waterseal-Ultra/dp/B001GU2EIO/ref=pd_sim_diy_1 and will try it out on one of my light weight turnouts and let you all know how it goes. Good or bad!

i have no idea if anyone does rug cleaning in my area! i normally jst buy new ones but now in same posistion as poiuytrewq with 3 i cant really afford to buy 3 lots of new rugs every winter!, how much does washing/reproofing normally cost?

think ill take a look at the brick sealants!

ive had to keep the poor sod stabbled at night till i get it reproofed/get a new one cant say hes too pleased but on the plus side saves me having to fetch him from the neighbouring field every morning when he jumps out! #grass is always greener!

Found Nikwax totally useless! Rug came out the bath, after the 2 hour soak, extactly the same. It took me about 4 hours in total to wash and ''reproof'' and a couple of days to dry, and nearly £12 a bottle that does 2 rugs, I took the half bottle back to the shop and got the money back. Its a waste of time.

I re-proofed 3 x shetland rugs and 2 x 6'0 full necks with one bottle of fabsil. It's brilliant stuff. I used a rag to wipe it on and when that took too long I got a mini paint roller out of the shed and used that instead. Stinks like hell if you do it indoors, but I hung the rugs on the fence and they were dry in a few hours.

I use nikwax rug proof. They recommend on the bottle that you use 500ml per rug. I've never had it not work & I wash & reproofed
all my own rugs and all the
liveries' rugs. I wash the rugs first
(I have an industrial washer) & then rewash, with the rug proof poured in at this stage. Every time I pick the reproofed rugs out of the washer, water pours off them, everywhere,as they are so blimmin waterproof! I have to put them in an Ikea bag to take them outside for drying or I have a trail of water thru the house!
