Looking for a saddle for a dales pony. He currently has a 10 inches D-D 17 inch seat forward cut GP. its the forward cut bit that's the problem. What would you recommend? On a student budget so nothing too pricy please :)

I had this problem with my Connie and started looking for a working hunter saddle as it's more straighter cut. In the end got a Fylde show saddle but the cut is again straight cut. Fylde saddles are pricey but so seem to hold their value and are lovely quality :)

Thanks :)

I'm eBay now having a look around, I'll search for Fylde and see if there are any :)

Second hand saddles are not making great money at the moment, so you are likely to get a real bargain if you spend time trawling through ebay. I have a Dales x, he is not fat, but has no wither at all, his saddle is an Ideal FWB (for wide backs) it was as new and I paid £350 on ebay a couple of months ago, it's fab. Ideal Working Hunter saddles are great for natives, they fit behind the shoulder and will be available more reasonably at this time of the year. I also have a Thorowgood T8 and a T6 which are good saddles and can be adjusted very easily as the horse changes shape.

Ideal Haflinger and Cob saddles come up wide enough, also Bates do a new Wide saddle which has a more straighter cut front and gullets up to xxxxw!!
Good luck :)

We had a Dales at the yard, agree with an Ideal saddle. I think before she had that she had a wintec wide , so you could maybe look at that if you don't have a large budget.

Most Dales don't need a hoop tree, it can be very unstable on them. I do occasionally fit them with a hoop tree with a slight curve to the seat, but more commonly fit them with a neat tree, with a not too wide seat or pommel, but very flat from front to back. Fylde saddles tend not have much depth of panel, like most showing saddles, and that doesn't always give the pony the best level of comfort.

I could help with recommending which second hand versions of models I sell might work, if you pm me and can send me photos.
