I’ve almost run out of paddy’s two shampoos and we’re running out of his coat conditioner/detangler spray... which has of course triggered a thirty minute google trying to find the best possible without spending masses. So I thought I’d ask if anyone had any really good shampoos or detanglers, bonus if it’s for grey coats? As with all greys he is a mud monster and spreads mud a good 50cm past where his rug starts, plus his tail is just horrendous, I don’t think there’s any white left on it at the moment!
I bought wahl stain remover last time, that was decent for the price, but the wahl purple shampoo didn’t seem to do much extra whitening when used after the stain remover. Any suggestions gratefully received ?

Fairy liquid and hot water wash for end of tail. Tresemme conditioner/Lidl equivalent through tail regularly is much cheaper than horse products
Ooh that is a good idea, yes it seems a bit ridiculous that my horse’s shampoo costs over twice what mine does! And we have a hot wash at the yard so that could work

Echo that - Lidl tea tree shampoo is great. Fairy or other cheap washing up liquid (rinse well) and a combined 2 in 1 thing (conditioner and shampoo for humans) to stop the muck from sticking too much. The cheaper the better in human shampoos - they are harsh with lye and so better for horse cleaning.

If you really have to stain remove - especially on the tail - curtain whitener. it is harsh though so you have to rinse well. Pig oil to coat legs / tail etc to stop the mud sticking.

Ooh I'm an expert on this. Quicsilver shampoo is the best 'grey' specific shampoo out there, and I've tried them all. Lather up tail, leave it for a bit then wash off. Follow with touch of silver purple conditioner (super market)-cheap and works very well as it's purple tinted. Then spray liberally with pig oil!!

Save money by buying a tail bag and then only washing the tail occasionally! For really bad stains, champion tails do a purple stain removing power that is very good, you use it diluted so it lasts ages.

My favourite detangler for manes (tails for nice occasions) is the Eqyss survivor gel. It seems expensive but its so concentrated that you only need a tiny amount so the bottle lasts ages and it leaves hair super soft, shiny and smelling lovely.

ETA mine has sensitive skin so I don't use any harsh non-horse products on him, particularly given he ends up being washed more due to his colour! For non shampoo stain removing, carr day and martin's stain remover really works!

The best and longest lasting detangler/mane & tail spray is the Carr. Day and Martin one. I've tried loads of others, and they don't last longer than a day.

I like the Cowboy Magic range for shampoo and stain spray, they are the best I've found. Their detangling serum is also very good, though expensive.

I have problems with keeping bottom of tails extra white, but I wash 1-2 times per week with the cowboy magic purple shampoo and hope for the best.

ALso use fairy liquid blue occasionally too.

Any better recommendations also gratefully received by me.

BTW - I have three greys, one of which lives out.

Buy deep rugs like PE and use neck covers.

Tesco value shampoo, pink stuff that used to come in a large bottle for 50p, was the best general shampoo I’ve come across. Left the horse gleaming and smelling nice!

The white stuff that has replaced it is pretty good too! A bit more watery, but does a great job on my grey. Warm water and HandsOn grooming gloves make washing a more pleasant task.

To add extra sparkle I do a rinse in any purple shampoo. Usually only on the tail though as it's generally the only thing that needs the extra help.

I like Gallop shampoo, just for the smell. I've given up with de- tanglers in the winter since I found out coconut oil keeps it tangle free for ages and helps the mud drop off. I agree with greys having to be white. I don't have one anymore, but used purple shampoo from home bargains when I did own a grey.

I’ve started using Asda anti-dandruff when really scurfy and also on any scabby areas. For more general washing I usually use a tea-tree oil horse shampoo. For shows I use colour enhancing shampoo for either bay or chestnut and whitening shampoo (I think I have Supergroom) socks and other white markings.

I use canter mane and tail about once a week when I brush out their tails it’s not cheap but lasts for ages.

For shows I also use Naf Razzle Dazzle finishing spray.

The final result.

is the smart grooming polar white a purple/blue shampoo? Never mind, just googled it! Is it as good as it looks in the promo videos?

I really love the NAF mane and tail detangler as it doesn’t leave a sticky residue like some of the others do. I have, however, been tempted by a cheap (about £2.50) human olive oil and coconut oil spray (ORS, I think) that was recommended on a Facebook group, recently. I couldn’t find it in Tesco so bought a Palmers version. I have yet to try it.

Smart Grooming white spray is great for touch ups, hocks, etc.

Touch of Silver (human) shampoo for washing; Vetrolin if you want a horse specific one.

Pig oil legs (spot test first) and tail to keep them cleaner for longer and helps keep tail detangled.

I live the NAF silky mane and Tail and the Equimins Blue Shampoo! It's worked wonders on my coloureds legs! It's only £5 in our local tack store, seems to be more expensive online though

I had run out of horse shampoo so last week used my shampoo from my swimming bag - Superdrug 2 in 1 post swimming shampoo for kids (mango scented)
It did an amazing job! Left her tail really soft and silky. I didn't get chance to spray extra conditioner on or brush it through straight away but when I brushed it later that day the comb slid straight through - unheard of in thick cob tail!

I like naf tea tree oil shampoo otherwise, I tend to find it brings them up nice and clean.

Just to throw another into the mix. Vital equine do a whitening shampoo, I'm not sure if its online yet or you still have to ring to order it. But I would thoroughly recommend any grey owners trying it. I use a cheap supermarket shampoo to get initial mud and muck off then use that sparingly. Brilliant on tails.

Supermarket own coconut shampoo and conditioner.
Palmers leave in conditioner spray for manes (the olive oil one is particularly good)
Kids hair detangler with citronella (it's a headlice repelling one and it is better than most of the horse fly sprays I've tried!)
Canter mane and tail (yet to find a better one)
If I'm going all out for a show, then any of the Shapleys range, their hair polish is incredible.
I own a traditional with floor length tail and heavy feather, so I have tried most!

Head and Shoulders. Plain for the body / mane and with a bit of bi-carb added for the tail. Make it into a paste and apply to a wet tail. Work it into a lather, leave it for 10 minutes and rinse then do a final rinse with a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water. Then apply lots of spray on conditioner and brush through. You might need a few goes at it if it's really dirty.

I just can't justify spending more on horse shampoo that I do on my own! So horse gets Aldi baby shampoo. Although he doesn't show any dirt so can't comment on it's stain removal ability but his coat does feel lovely afterwards.
