Sorry to start another thread about 4x4's/towing, just a quick question please :) So I want to change my rover 25 for something which will tow one horse. I would prefer a smaller 4x4 as I dont really like huge cars and I have to drive 40mins to work so dont want ssomething which is going to kill me on petrol!! I was looking at the smaller landrover freelanders, petrol with I think a 1.8 engine (same engine as my dad's rover 75, and doesn't seem that expensive on petrol), what are they like to tow with? And any other recommendations welcome :) Thanks

Can't help with the towing I'm afraid, but be careful with the older freelanders they are known for the head gasket going at around the 70'000 miles Mark. Would suggest you have a search of google to make sure it's not the year your looking at.

I have heard rav 4's and obviously disco's are supposed to be very realiable 4x4's

Kia Sportage may be worth a look? A friend on my yard has one and uses it as her company car as very econmical, but also could legally tow a single trailer.

I have a Kia Sorento, which I know is bigger than you want, but for a budget 4x4 it has been a real find. Great for towing, good on diesel, and despite 96k on the clock, have never had a garage bill other than for routine issues.

ps I do not work for Kia!!!!!

Another vote for the kia sportage. Friend tows her HB505 with her eventer in and is economical (get the 2L not 2.7L V8!). I love them, after test driving the 2.7 V8 I am honestly in love with it. Shame it was the 2.7 and not the 2.0 as I think we would've had it if it were. :(

Don't tow with a rav4, it won't cope with towing anything other than a frog, and same goes for a honda cr-v and suzuki jimny.

Well, it depends on your budget I guess. For towing one horse you'd be ok I believe with the Kia Sportage and also the likes of the Grand Vitara, Nissan X-Trail, Ford Maverick/Nissan Terrano (same car, different badge). You would have to double check which models/engine size is the best though. I really like the Grand Vitara and feel it's a shame they don't make them more capable of towing greater weights as I think they are about the bets when it comes to actually 4x4 capability and they're pretty reasonably priced.

The Hyundai ix35 and new Kia Sorrento are pretty nice too but they are not cheap at the moment as only been out on the market about 1 year. Nice to drive though - not sure on their towing capacity and getting an actual 4WD version is hard as most are only 2WD!!
