Hi, Our fields get REALLY wet and muddy through winter & my pony always seems to get mud fever. What is the best stuff to use as a barrier? I know people use Pig Oil? I want to get in quick this year and prevent rather than treat! Tomorrows weather forecast is quite nice and he will be in his stable for the day anyway so thought I could clean his legs (& dry really well) and then apply.... Fill in the blank?! My mare has managed to get it on the outside of one of her hind 'thighs' but nowhere else...very odd but looks just like MF. Thanks!

i use udder cream. its really good stuff and waterproof aswell! only problem is trying to get it off! i have also used turnout chaps and they are ok but they tend to fold up near the hoof so the bottom bits of their legs still tend to get muddy. mine are in at night so i clean and dry them before stabling then apply udder cream in mornings before turn out. so far no mud fever! which is a miracle as my older horse seems to suffer with it and my 12 year old has 4 white legs!

I have had problems with mud fever in the past but not anymore. Is your horse stabled at night / day routinely? I use a barrier cream /oil (just got some pig oil but have used the NAF cream), I NEVER wash the legs, just rub down and then my boys wear Thermatex leg wraps over night. The wraps dry the legs quickly and keep them warm. This works for me and friends also do the same and they haven't got problems either.

Gold Label Mudguard applied a few times a week, don't wash legs - thermatex leg wraps at night and mud comes off by morning. Our horses are out on muddy deep clay with pink legs and they are fine.
