best stuff for coat condition and shine!!

Right, i have been feeding Inky and Ty BOSS for coat condition and shine. TBH ive not really noticed a great difference but they have only been on it a few months so not sure how long it takes??? I dont want to increase the amount as i dont want weight gain.

I am now changing their feeds to the simple system feeds and will be adding total eclipse ( linseed, brewers years, seaweed ) but i want to feed for coat condition too.

Should i still add the BOSS or will the total eclipse do it all?? Or should i add another oil instead?? I really dont want any weight gain so advice needed please???

I'm not sure it's normally meant to do this but Brewers Yeast added real shine to my boy's coat.

Ditto that; my lot have been great through the winter.
I also haven't had any sign of mud fever all winter either which is unheard of here with our clay ground so I don't know if BY can take any of the credit for that but it is the only thing to have been altered all year and we have been just as wet as normal years too.

Right - where do I get brewers yeast from??? And how much do I use??

Westgate (Gold Label) do it, also Simple Systems I think so you're local feed store should be able to order it for you. I use the Westgate one, comes in 1.5kg tubs and you'd use a scoopful a day for Thumper. A tub lasts 4 for over a month so it would last you ages! It's also meant to be good for flies too so might be worth a look if anything is sweet itchy. Oh, about £9 a tub so a bit pricier than oil but far less messy!.

My two have instant linseed and brewers yeast. I don't feed Total Eclipse now as I need more linseed and yeast and prefer to feed them as seperates and I can increase and reduce them throughout the year as I require. I also feed BSS.

My boys coats gleam - look like they have been groomed and show polished even when they only get a rough flick over a few times a week during winter.

I used to get my linseed and brewers yeast from SS, but have found that Charnwood Milling - http://www.charnwood-milling.co.uk - a friend collects mine direct for me. I get 8 linseed and 2 BY at a time which lasts me a year and saved several 100 pounds compared to small tubs - which I promptly spent on a huge vet bill

Purely because in summer I feed a large amount of brewers yeast for sweet itch and more linseed for show condition. I do vary it throughout the year, hence preferring to feed the linseed and yeast individually and not pre-mixed, so I am in control of how much of each they get.

Cairo has a fairly large amount of linseed for his joints and Chancer for coat/topline. Originally I fed total eclipse with extra linseed as recommended by SS.

I have not had any problems with BSS and linseed putting too much weight on but Chancer though a cob, is still young and does not pile on the weight and Cairo is not a problem either as he has lots of high fibre but low cal feeds.

This is Chancer last month - legs have been washed but rest is unwashed since last September and he gets a rough flick groom couple of times a week in winter. He is moulting though clipped and his coat still looks good.

Give him a good bath, groom and some alva on his coat and he really shines - even the white areas.

Thanks but he is my baby and as much as he is a little pest, I do love him. Still very much a baby but starting to fill out.

Now if you want one, I know of a beautiful 2 year old colt - done very well at showing to date and he has a temperament to die for, will be about 14.1 and makes my lad look like a skinny hairless wimp - going to be one hell of a solid cob.

If I didn't already have Chancer and Cairo, I would be up with the trailer to collect Troy tomorrow.

So you see, BSS and linseed do work, but it takes a little time. Cairo too has a wonderful gloss to his coat , even though it is getting greyer by the day. They also are excellent for joints and you should notice an improvement in the feet eventually. My poor old farrier has to get the extra sharp and strong nippers out to trim them and groans

Got to agree with the corn oil. I alternate between sunflower and vegetable oil from Asda in the big bottles, about £1.49 I think. You can see your face in Bergie's coat and I must admit it's not for the grooming he gets. He is a Shire X and I haven't found it makes him any fatter although he would still be fat if he wintered out on a golf course.

I have to say whilst we're on the SS feed regime at present, Willsy always looked best on Bailey's Outshine. Less messy than plain oil which I've fed by the bucket load to no effect and a vit supplement to boot. A 20KG bag @ £30 used to last about 3 months at a rate of 1-1.5 mug fulls per day so would last you forever!
