Now that OScar is out on grass 247 I'm starting to wonder whether too much acidin his gut is not helping his new napping behaviour....

I had him on pink powder and I don't think that was doin anything as this napping period started before he came off it. I started him on Top Spec balancer (supplement and not the feed) and he was bad on Tuesday.

So, took him off it but looking at the ingredients there isn't alot of protein but there is alot of oil - he reacted badly to Showmix so although I've been told 'oil couldn't possibly heat up a horse' I'm beginning to think it can!

What calmer's have you used and have they had any effect at all on your horse? He doesn't need any condition so is not being fed at all over the past 4 days....

I used the Equine America So Calm, which I think helped the best of all i tried, but a bit pricey, but aren't they all! I also tried One by a company called Science With Nature, which do a liquid one, which you can feed daily or give to them half hour or so before you need it, in whatever dose you need. Apparantly it is used with the police horses, and I found it to be quite good, i think it was called Equine De-Stress. Google the company and it should come up. There are others coming out on the market that you use before needed, administering like a wormer.
I often wonder if these are just a placebo effect to make us feel better!

I use the topspec calmer and have been really happy with it. He is cool as a cumcumber when we are out and as a five year old I'm impressed. I put him on it as whilst he is a laid back boy he could be a bit spooky away from home and have a little too much nervous energy. I spoke with all the different companies and the topspec (imo from what they said) had the best ingredients and quality. He's been on it two months and has been calm and happy and not spooky when away from home.

Having said this it could just be down to the fact he's got used to going out and nothing to do with the calmer!! hope this helps.

I am using the Magnesium Oxide tablets from the health food shop 25mg tablets, four twice a day for Marius. I am using them as a supplement to help his weight and to balance his minerals (I also feed a little additional salt). He also gets Brewers' Yeast, a scoop a day, which contains B vitamins. Both these will act as a 'calmer'. All I can say is that Marius is on very restricted turnout due to laminitis, and is as calm and chilled as can be. This is a horse that has previously been unrideable through stressing when kept in alone (just for tacking up for a lesson, half an hour max!). I can't believe it! It can only be the magnesium and B vitamins, as he's not on any other calmer.
I would try these before buying the other calmers, as this way is much less expensive!

By the way, Marius became a gibbering wreck on TopSpec Balancer, and I believe it is the high dose of amino acids that do it. TopSpec said no other horse had ever reacted that way - but HHO said different!

Lysine and methionine seem to be the culprits, not the oil.

I have to say I used a number of different ones on a nervy TB that I had who was really spooky when hacking alone and none worked I did see a company at Badminton this year who had a new product out and that seemed quite impressive but I havent tried it so cannot comment on its effectiveness.

How about saving your money and feeding Magnesium Sulphate, about £2/3, commomly known as Epsom Salts!! It is known as a calming mineral, must be worth a try at that price!

I give my horse Magnitude from Equine America, it's basically pure magnesium and only costs £14.99 for 6 months supply.

Although I didn't realise Epsom Salts were the same thing, might try that next time!

I have used NAF Magic in the past, to good effect, but it's expensive. I now give both my TB's magnesium oxide (heavy) which I get off Ebay - much purer and cheaper, and I have to say we haven't had any 'spring grass' silliness from either of them this year, they have been perfect on fun rides in large groups etc.

Be careful! Epsom salts are a laxative, and not the same as Magnesium Oxide

If you google Epsom Salts you'll be surprised at the medicinal effects it has! It has its uses with Alzheimer patients and some forms of autism too.
