Hi,

My 15yo Dutch warm blood had a kissing spines operation in 2013. At the same time as going through this he was also diagnosed with bone spavin in both back hocks. His back seems to be fine but his hocks had to compensate a lot due to his back pain which made his hocks worse. I put him on tumeric as was advised it works well for joint problems. He's been off tumeric for just over a month now and his physio said he's my h worse now and recommended I put him back on the tumeric and superflex also. Looking at reviews online quite a lot of people seem to think cortaflex works better than superflex. Can anyone tell me the main differences, what would work best for my horse and your personal experiences and opinions?

Thanks in advance.

Depends how much you want to spend and how invasive you want to be tbh.

I use Boswellia Serrata, as a joint supplement - I haven't have a lot of success with Cortaflex over the years.

You could always try Osphos, or a course of Cartrophen.

A supplement with MSM is indicated for horses with bone spavin athough i am not sure why this is.

I've had my horse on the Equine Amercia supplement for years which has Glucosamine/Chrondroitin/MSM and now with the addition of HA. Like my vet has always said, you only know how good a supplement is until you take the horse off it. This is the lower price end of the market, I believe cortaflex is much better.

This was particuarly true of the one supplement I use.

My spavin fella has turmeric daily. He gets a good feed of D &H safe and sound which I think contains MSM (correct me if I am wrong) plus other stuff such as rosehips. I also give him Top Spec senior lite balancer which already contains their joint supplement (glucosamine etc). In addition to this, over the winter he's been on devil's claw root. Hopefully he won't need the devil's claw as I just had his steroid injections done again which should last him the summer. However the vet said he can stay on devil's claw as long as I like as it will be of benefit.
I have tried joint supplements (equine america) but went for the top spec balancer as I like my horse to have yeasts etc for digestion (he's a lami risk) and it seemed the cheapest option.
The things I can say definitely work - ie he's worse when he's not having them - are devil's claw, the top spec balancer, and safe and sound as a feed.
