Hi All,
Can anyone provide their advice or experience on the best supplement for a 13 year old gelding following his second bout of Synovitis in his front fetlock? Its going to be an on-going issue, he sustained an impact injury last year, which resulted in a week at the vets, various tests, X-Rays, Nerve blocks and Synovitis was diagnosed, the joint was drained of the blood, and steroid injected to re-fill the lost synovial fluid, he spent most of the summer out of action.
It flared up again in December, and hes been back a week or so now following another nerve blocking and same synovitis diagnosis in the same fetlock, which was steroid injected, and topped up the next day, although he was still slightly lame on it when he returned from the vets, this seem to have completely gone and he's back to his usual cheeky self albeit a little on the slim side at the minute.
I've put him on Cortaflex HA Super Strength but its quite expensive at £48 a bottle, and I'm giving him 20ml per day split between two feeds (as hes only allowed to walk at the minute, so not hard work so I haven't gone the full whack at 30ml per day). I've also got him on day, son & Hewitt Maximise sachets to help his gut and improve digestion of his feed and bacteria to help him as hes on box rest and a fussy hay eater, this is added to his AM/PM feeds of Conditioning fiber and Baileys performance balancer, along with 70g of micronized linseed.
We hope to get back to some BE this year so I'd like to keep him in tip-top condition as best I can help him!
Is there any other joint supplement out there with high levels of HA that you can recommend? He needs the help to replace the lost synovial fluid, but I can't seem to easily break down the mg's of HA per supplement, but it would be nice to hear of other peoples successes too? Or if theres something not HA based that might be just as good?
TIA
