Hi guys!! My horse has recently got ulcers. we are treating him with gastro guard. I will also be giving him gastro guard before any outings/shows or anything new and stressful, Tbh I am very confused as he is not a stressy horse at all and looks literally in perfect condition even the vet said this. I obviously want to stop him from getting ulcers ever again. Right now he is having gastro guard as treatment, he has hay 24/7, he has pectigut pellets with his feed. I need to prevent him getting them again. I was wondering what people reccomend/any supplements. I was going to use acid ease and have heard good things about ponease ulc maintance which is a syringe u give them 15 mins before riding to stop acid splash. And he will be getting a handful of chaff before every ride. I would appreciate any tips or help thanks so much!!

Science supplements gastrokind is good spec, but any supplement which contains similar ingredients at similar levels should help, so check what’s on the label of whatever you buy.

Science supplements is one of very few that specifically say how much of each ingredient they contain, also pretty much the only one with any clinical research behind it! The ones the vet’s recommend (pectigus) doesn’t specify…draw your own conclusions here! I’d not bother with anything that doesn’t clearly state quantities.

What is the source of the ulcers? Treat that and you’ll be more likely to prevent them. Have you checked for pain or discomfort everywhere? What’s the routine? Has he access to hay/grass all the time?

You’ll need to make sure he is never without hay or grass while he is on the gastroguard too x

Thanks so much, hes had his saddle checked all good, hes had his back done all good, hes had his bloods done all good, general "MOT" from the vet all good, farrier all good, he felt amazing and was jumping 1.20 out at shows before. He is not a stressy horse at all, but he can be fresh coming into colder weather around now. Vet also mentioned about very sweet grass around now. At shows and out schooling he literally just eats and sleeps in the lorry he loves going out and about and is so chill at shows, Then once I get on him hes a jumping machine. He gets hay 24/7 taken him off haylage. He goes out every day unless there is bad weather. Hes got toys, salt licks, healthy no sugar licks, forage blocks in his stable. Any thoughts are much appreciated.

He has a very consistent routine, fed every day at same time, he goes on the walker then I ride him at between 9-11am ,then he goes out and gets brought in before dinner, has his dinner at the same time, stays in overnight with plenty of hay.

I have used Feedmark Gastric stuff very successfully. All you need is an antacid so don't worry about making it too complicated as essentially it's limestone flour and another form of antacid. I would rather chop my fingers off than use Ponease.

Tbh my best purchase was a hanging bucket. Now when they come in they automatically all get given chaff. Usually give them a scoop. It's just part of the routine. Chaff before travel and hand grazed if off for the day along with a haynet. They get gastric supplement before and at competitions in the chaff.

No hard feed above 8% starch.

I feed sugarbeet for pectins.

I am super anal if they come in during the day in summer because it's hot and they get fed much larger quantities of chaff. Usually leave a bowl with 3/4 scoops of chaff so they can help themselves with some added inducement like grass cubes. It's because they will eat less as come in to sleep/chill if hot so then can irritate there stomachs.

Every single horse except the Shetland (who isn't ridden) is on this routine and haven't *touch wood* had any issues since and have had a fair few horses.

as much as i thought it was all just hype and snake oil, Equinectar made the biggest difference to my ulcer prone one-literally went from virtually unrideable rearing backwards over the fence to bobbing round happily in 48 hours. I was super sceptical but it really did change the pony completely. He also has ponease ulc maintenance before travel, work or shows and since starting that has been MUCH more rideable in the ring and settled on the lorry.

anyone on here knows that IRL i wouldnt be saying this is it wasnt true, i didnt even expect either to make any difference and only tried them to prove they didnt work except........they did!!!!

Vet told me 2lts of chaff so a big scoop pre-ride . It weighs about 250 gms which is why the vet says lts rather then weight so much more then a handful. She is also on acid ease from protexin . She has since had laminitis and is EMS so is on a very strict diet but so far all seems good on the ulcer side of her problems . I was very worried about not being on adlib hay but as she still likes me to clean her udder without kicking so I am confident all is well .
It sounds like you are doing everything possible for them not to return so hope it goes well for you . Just maybe up the pre ride chaff.

It shows how individual they all are and how complex treatment is. Mine is on equinectar and it has made no difference at all to her unfortunately. But then nothing has really, poor girl.

Thanks so much everyone will defo be upping the chaff pre ride. How long before you ride do you give it to your horses. I was always told 30 mins before? Think Im going to get the science supplements gastro kind.

mine gets them from the stress of travelling! I have him on immubiome g-tract, which works wonders! I've also had him on Silver lining herbs TLC tummy too but at the moment he doesn't seem as settled on that, so he's back on g-tract.

I also removed, soya, molasses, alfalfa and wheat from his diet after the first bout of ulcers
