My field shelter gets slightly wet and muddy at the back, i need a cheap solution of something to put down so the horses can stand on dry ground. I dont want to put bedding down as they only use it to shelter from the rain and flies and i think bedding would make it even wetter once they had tramped all over it.
I had thought of putting rubber mats down but i think they would get slippy when wet, someone suggested putting large paving slabs down, dont know if that work or not?
I only rent the field short term so dont want to spend a fortune.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have rubber mats down in mine, they don't get slippery when wet - IMO paving slabs would be slippery for shod hooves.

My mats have been laid straight down on the earth and I'm really happy with them, they have been down 2 years now. My friend puts straw on top of the mats in her field shelter but I don't bother as I find they pee in there if I do!

I also rent my field and whilst the mats were quite expensive I know I can move them around should I move the shelters and I can take them with me if I leave.

What about that black stuff, we call it motorway scalpings, its like black ash/hardcore but black, its what they chip up off motorways when they resurface, we have put it in our field gate way, it cost £15 delivered and its great and beds down easy. We bought it off a man who gets lorry loads for free off the motorway, and sells it to people for all kinds of uses, he has it down as the surface for his whole yard.
