My horse has quite a sensitive back - I tried a Lemieux half pad and a prolite but they seem to alter the width of my saddle far too much. Is there a thin pad that will give him some extra padding/comfort or do I get on and get the saddler out to change my gullet?

What do people think of the thin Gel eze pads?

Thanks

E x

There are the Eco gold pads, which are thin and lovely by eye wateringly expensive

I still think the geelee type pads alter the fit as much as sheepskin, which is just a thick numnah

If it were me, I'd alter the saddle to use a thicker saddle pad in general (stops lumps and bumps on the ging)

Thanks J_C I had looked at the eco gold pads - they do look fab but yes, eye watering price!

Have called my saddler for a chat - I think she will say the same re widening the saddle....

I've just brought a Acavello sheepskin thing, which is a gel pad with the "edge" on it to make it look like a half pad. It is very thin, but still makes the saddle too narrow for madam's liking :( so yes, widening the saddle I think is probably a good bet!!

I have a Thinline one and have used them successfully in the past. They aren't insane money from the supplier but I just googled a bit here and they are half as much again, not even allowing for the exchange!! A good option for a minimal profile pads though.

If you do decide to go a bit wider, look at the memory foam pads, like the Equi-Fit ones. They are fantastic but pricey so you probably don't want to try a bunch of other ones then end up there.

I've got one of the really thin gel-eze pads. I got it as a thin pad to help stabilise his saddle (it fits but unfortunately his OTT welsh movement makes it move a bit more than I would like) and I thought it would also act a impact protection which can't be a bad thing :) I'm not sure how well it protects like a cushion but it has definitely served its purpose and is only very thin. It is the only thing that hasn't altered the fit of his saddle :)

Thanks so much for your thoughts everyone!! TarrSteps I will have a better look at the ones you suggested later as Im at work at the moment!

KatB - how do you find the Acavallo pad? I liked the look of them but am suprised they changed the saddle so much as they do look thinner. Do you think they do the job though in terms of cushioning?

They're lovely and squidgy. TBH, I'm not sure they do change it *that* much, but madams saddle is vv.close contact and she's round and sensitive, so think she just felt it a bit. I think they would offer some impact protection, that's why I brought it!! It's now going begging though :(

Well, Canadian actually. ;)

If you go to their site there is a UK number there and ordering information. I'm not sure if they have a stockist here yet or are still just doing trade (tbh they're almost impossible to buy in shops even in Canada, they mostly do competitions and trade fairs) but they'll be able to sort you one if you want it.
