What would you all reccomened for a shiny coat?

Josie is a very good dooer, pos too good, and only has to look at food to put on weight. But I've noticed, more so recently, her coat isn't as healthy as it could be. I've been grooming til my arms ache, but to little avail. Maybe she's getting a bit tired now feeding Denver, I dont know? She's being ridden more and loving it. She has really perked back up and has loads of energy.

She's currently being fed hi fi lite and a vit/min suplement at reccomended rate for a lactating mare. She is by NO means poor, infact was getting quite worried by her weight, and her muscles are building up nicely. Would just be nice if she has a little more shine to her?

Thankies xxxxx

A generous dollop of vegetable oil in the feed is often a good way to get the coat shiny. Doesn't sound like you are feeding her much for a lactating mare, but presumably she must be on very good grazing to hold her weight.

Thanks will try that.

Yes grazing is very good. There is an underground stream down there so the sun and no rain hasn't affected our grazing at all. When the vet came to give them their jabs she told me to put her on this as she started to look like she was 11 months in foal again!! She really was HUGE!!

Could it just be the change in season? Is she casting her summer coat and getting wooly?

She's not mouting at all. I'd have noticed with all the grooming! Maybe she's about to start though?

Linseed...but if she's a good doer perhaps not!

Saying that Simple Systems Instant Linseed is pretty good and it probably wouldn't take much for a nice shine!

I have noticed that the black sunflower seeds gives a soft glossy coat since feeding them.

Linseed - either instant linseed or the oil is good.

Money no object - feed equidermis from Feedmark - ultimate healthy and shiney coat but at a price.

When I wash mine, I put a dash of pig oil in a final rinse and it really shines them up nicely.

I would recommend a good slop of oil too, veg or cod liver oil, or any other horse friendly, beneficial oil.
And i also agree that this change in seasons makes the coat look duller for sure.
And if its just for the showring then a nice bit of baby oil on a cloth and wipe it over the coat

I feed my boy soya oil. He always gets a lovely coat. Feed it every autumn and spring when his coat goes from winter to summer or vice versa. Makes a huge difference.

My only worry is you said your boy is prone to putting on weight - if you are going to feed an oil just beware of how much you put in!

Good luck x

Both AmyMay's and loan horses coats have gone horrid overnight - it really is that time of year.

Grooming won't make any difference - except to your arms!!

If you are genuinly concerned that something is lacking then perhaps look at what your feeding etc.

But really at this time of year unless your horse is rugged up to the eyeballs, there's not much you can do.

Thanyou Amymay, it does make me feel better. She's great in herself, and was lovely and shiny a few weeks ago. Oh well. I'll give the sunflower seeds and/or linseed a go and just wait for the nice coat to come through
