Best thing for scabby legs

When we 1st got Dougal we turned him out in boots for a few days but he has very sensitive legs and they re-acted a bit. Anyway he doesnt wear them now and I looked at his leg last night and it all scabby under the skin

picked one scab off but thought id have a bit of a go at it tonight!

Whats best to help soften it? Was going to hibi - scrub and then pick them off, what shall I put on the sores? antibacterial cream or sudocream or something?
 
Dylan's got exactly the same thing and i was going to ask my trainer about it this at our lesson next week or ask on here before! So will be watching this post with interest!

We use a tub of zinc and castor cream, mixed with a bottle of tea tree oil. Brilliant mixture. Lasts ages. I've used it on some nasty cuts and it seems to reduce scarring too.
 
I tend to put IVHorse 4in one oil on b's legs if there is anything scabby

He picks up a lot of little ticks and quite often has a wee scabby bit or 2 and this stuff clears up everything grazes, wee cuts and bumpy or flaky skin, sweat rash, you name it.

I also slap it on face & legs & personal bits just as part of his fly repellant regime.

It's natural antiseptic & flyrepellant. It's ace stuff, use it on everything and recommend it to all!. Lasts forever too.

As my post in stable yard - think I have Mellanders on the back of my girls knees - never goes away.

Got some pig oil and Sulphur - but .....

How do you mix it up - what quantities
How often do you put it on
Do you wash it off
How quick does it work
When do you stop using it

Bet you wish you hadnt mentioned Pig Oil and Sulpher now !

I've found that some usually feathered, legs are prone to mites. Symptoms are a scabby 'bobbly' patches on the legs, sometimes rubs and 'sore' patches or areas will little hair where the horse has rubbed. You might notice little scrapes and bloody areas as well. Horses can also stamp a lot if they are itching and some will become really agressive about picking their feet up or letting you touch their legs.

The best cure for mites is to clip the legs out. We use hibiscrub to wash the legs as well and I've heard frontline will kill the mites but is expensive.

How do you mix it up - what quantities - I usually mix about 2 handfuls of sulphur in a large bucket of pig oil
How often do you put it on - I do it every 2 weeks but some horses only need it every 4-6 weeks
Do you wash it off - No - just leave it on and then reapply over it - I only was legs for shows
How quick does it work - Caspers legs usually clear up within 2-3 days
When do you stop using it - never unfortunately - unless the mud fever miraculously disappears (oh how I wish it would!)

He is a TB so hardly has any hair!!

Will try some suggestions tonight and see how we get on

to get scabs off use a product from net tex called de scab it is for that job of getting scabs off and protecting the skin that you leave behind it soothes aswell!
 
Hot water, tree treel shampoo (soothing), soft sponge, get scabs off, rinse with hibiscub and finish with cold water to sooth and prevent any swelling, dry thoroughly and just apply flamozine cream (vets sell it without needing a consultation as they sell it in pharmacies too) on the sore (where scab has been) its important that you keep the rest of area dry, clean and have air circulating around it. Repeat process twice a day every day for a a few weeks, putting boots on will only make the horses legs warm and moist (even sweaty) the perfect environment for the bacteria to breed.

All tried and tested on a TB...with white socks

If its a a case of some other kind of itchy scabby thing then slap some Coopers FR Plus on, that's great for mites/lice or any kind of bug invested little cretons that might be nawing away at your horses skin.
