What is your preferred product for plugging abscess holes?

I have always flushed the hole out with hydrogen peroxide, then plugged it with iodine soaked cotton wool, smearing vaseline over the top to seal - but I have been recommended to try Black Tac by my trimmer. I did suck my breath in a bit at the price, but is it worth it?

What do you do?

All thoughts, musings and suggestions gratefully received!

Guessing you mean after it's finished draining and healed?

Depends on size hole. Small holes get keratex hoof putty directly smeared over hole. Bigger holes get little wad of cotton wool soaked in a disinfectant to fill majority then hoof putty to seal.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will pick up some hoof putty, I think. The abscess has drained, but I just want to make sure that nothing nasty gets back in there.

He's going to be under someone else's care for a few weeks, so I want to make sure that they don't have any abscess issues to deal with.
