I took BH drag hunting on Sunday and he was rather keen and then knackered himself out so was leaning on my hands. No blood but there is dead skin peeling away from the corners of his lips on both sides. Is there anything better than vaseline (which is what got used at work) to prevent further damage/help him heal.

I'm not usually particularly heavy handed but he was tired and leaning so a fair amount of pulling was required to get his head up to jump the last few. Hopefully as his fitness improves he won't be so heavy in the hand and the problem will go away. Otherwise will have to revise our bit choice!

Sudocrem is far better than vaseline, if you put some on before riding it will last a fair while, I use it before and after and the skin heals really quickly.

I use vaseline on the edges like you but sudacrem is also fab. Last year mine kept getting sore bits on the creases of his lips.. just a pinch but sometimes the skin would break. I've loads of bitting issues with min which are now resolved but the one thing that god us through was manuka honey. A lady at ours is a nurse and gae me tubes of medical grade manuka honey - it was amazing!! I now use it for everything..

Had to share that whilst we were on the subject!

Thanks guys.

You can tell I post in NL more than in here can't you? That last paragraph of my OP sounds very grovelling!

Manuka honey is excellent. Put Vaseline on before you ride and the honey on straight after and as many times as you can through the day. They normally heal very quickly. Comfrey cream is also good. Be careful of sudocreme if you are competing and there is a possibility of being dope tested.

Be careful with vaseline (the regular kind), it's composed almost entirely of petroleum and can actually dry lips/skin etc especially if it's a hot day. It also blocks pores etc so reduced the release of natural oils etc. (or that's what I was always told :) ) Use bit butter or sudocream or just go bitless for a couple of days whilst it heals (had to do this with french a couple of times...was interesting... :p )

Second Aces High, we have a very delicate mare and use Preperation H which is a pile ointment. Vaseline just provides a lubricant but essentially keeps it soft, prep H works as it helps the skin retain elasticity while promoting healing.

Bonjela - teething gel and also can use it on mouth ulcers. It is brilliant on any damage in or around the mouth - and very safe as it is used in human and babies mouths so no problem for our horses. Very soothing and heals rapidly.

I have some glycerin which you get from chemists and just put some of that on their tongue and lips. They quite like it as its sweet, something our old horseman dentist recommends :)

What in sudocreme shows up in a dope test  I've never heard that before?

I'm not sure I can face going to buy preparation H :o Might have to be Sudocreme or Bonjela. He's had three days without a bit now and he's pretty much fixed but might vaseline him up for Sunday so he doesn't do the exact same thing again (this is why we used vaseline at work, prevention rather than cure). Not that I think I can take another day of him leaning on me! I'm not as fit as I used to be. I should get my butt down to Newmarket to ride a few before work everyday I reckon. That would sort me out sharpish!

ETS: stevieg, are you a Liverpool supporter or someone called stevie :p :D

Prep H is good! Although I get my Mother to buy it! I use Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream and Bit Butter.

I have a horse atm with a sore mouth (been away at dressage boot camp!) and I have been using Bit Butter when I ride her, smother the bit in it and the sides of her mouth, then Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream at night and after ridden work. Amazing stuff!

The vet also gave me something which looks and smells similar to the Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream and is just as good, can't remember the name of it though! (probably alot cheaper!)

My lad split 1 corner of his mouth last autumn I tried everything with not much success for 3 months. Eventually I caved in & used my Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream & it healed it within 3 days! He has split it again a few times since but the 8 hour cream works brilliantly, my EDT said it's the best thing for split mouths. I also use alum powder to strengthen the area.

Oh superb elizabeth arden for the horse ... Love it :D:D:D:D
Another for bit butter, my mares mouth is sensitive, i use bit butter daily, and baby bonjela if she gets sore, i might get the EA then if my skins dry at the yard i can use it

Where did you get the alum powder from, can i get it from any chemist ?

Another vote for 8 hour cream. I happened to have some in my bag once when my lad got a small nick on his lip and thought i'd try in the absence of vaseline. It healed nicely after two days.

I did get mick taken out of me by instructor though for using Elizabeth Arden on him, but if it works why not ! 😃

Sudocrem has a mild local anaesthetic in it and benzyl benzoate. Bonjela is also not allowed as it contains salicylates.

Can't see any thing which would work as an anaesthetic in there tbh?

Is benzyl benzoate a banned substance?

ETS: PMSL at the thought of Elizabeth Arden face cream. Over my dead body! I don't love him that much  :D
