I have to have my colt gelded, not because he's nasty, not because he's got bad conformation or badly bred but because I have been unable to secure any land/stables.
It's very sad but now that I've made the decision the vet told me I cannot have him gelded until March. Is this a general rule?
I don't know because all my previous horses have been mares or fillies.

Sorry if i missed it but how old is your colt??.I had my colt done as soon as his balls droped. He was a late developer so he was done at 16 months old.And i dont think he has still forgivenb me and that was 6 years ago.

The best time to geld is when it isnt too hot (summer) or too cold (frosts) as those conditions prolong the bleeding.
Autumn and spring are generally the best times to have one done, but its not impossible to do one at other times. The last few days have been mild enough - getting the timing right is the problem.
How are you planning to manage the aftercare if you dont have land/stables sorted out? He will need a relatively mud free field for a week or so, or alternatively lead outs a few times a day.

He's four, I left him entire because I hoped to secure land and stables of my own. As I say he's impeccable in every way, he's been shown in hand and is good in company, but I'm on the point of backing him now and the area I live in is really weird for horse owners/riders who actually want to get on and compete properly so there's not much help around either and certainly no professional producers.

As mentioned above, spring or autumn is best. Not only because of the weather but needs to have no flies to aggrivate/risk infection to the wound.

Should be ok out as long as site is kept clean. We have had several left out in the field. If weather is dry have always been fine.

Our section A colt was done at 2 1/2 this autumn as only just had 2nd one descended! Poor chap thought he was in with the ladies then got a rude awakening!! lol

I've had colts cut at 3 years and 2 year old. My current 7 month old colt will be cut this spring. Wish I got my other colts cut earlier because of the colty behavoir always playying and galloping arround which was lovely to see. So much easier to handle now they are gelded,. Cut the earlier the better I'd say..
