best time to thank a car driver

Following on from the post re thanking car drivers, when do you thank a driver who is overtaking you? Before during or after they pass? I usually thank as they are coming past but im not sure if drivers even see my wave most of the time.

I say thankyou to every car that passes, no matter how they passed me. My logic being if they were being an idiot then they will feel guilty and think better next time. Probably not, but this is what I tell myself....

When they overtake I lift my hand right up into the air just as they are pulling in, assuming they check their mirrors before pulling in they should see the wave!
