best treatment for mites

I had my little man gelded a fortnight ago and whilst he was sedated the little blighters rose to the surface of his fur... eurgh! I now need to deal with them. I have been debating the best course of treatment and thinking I will worm him with Ivermectin based wormer, clip the feathers off (there aren't that many but I will get rid of what is there) any other 'topical suggestions to go with this?
 
clip feathers off then get some frontline from the vet/farm stores when they ask what its for you have to say your dog convincingly otherwise they won;t sell it to you as its not liscensed in horses but it does work! the spray is best rather than the spot on as its easier to diustribute over the whole leg but if not use a spot on on each leg.
 
The frontline spray worked on my lad - I'm having problems getting it tho as you really need a prescription. I think I'm going to get the Invermectin injection from the vet next week, also as mine is heavily feathered you've got the get the spray in really deep and not miss anywhere and he is currently getting scabs in very random places quite high up his legs. There are lots of people on here who have had great success with pig oil and sulphur as well.
 
My new mare had the injection and worked really well had to have it repeated 10 days after first one. Tried frontline and worked for about a week on her and that was it.
 
You can get the injection from the vet or get frontline.

You do not need a prescription for frontline

My friend gets it all the time from the online pharmacys-she does have to apply it every couple of weeks but it does work for her and she doesn't need to clip off her feathers on her horse.
 
Hi,. this may be a very thick question but what do they look like. Asking as just got a foal at my place which has small light brown flea like things on his white bits (body not legs) and thought they were harvest mites but my gelding who is stabled next door now has scabs on his saddle patch and I am just wondering if could be related??
 
hi, not sure if frontline will be best solution, think my post was a bit misleading, I am trimming his frathers but his mites are all over

I think I am going to go with the wormer for now, I can't wait for the injection until the vet comes out in 3 weeks because my mare will be moving to be with him and I don't want her to get infested :eek:

I will reasses when the vet is next due to see him to give him his tetanus and chat with the vet, It may be that I just worm him and use frontline to keep it at bay after that.
 
I haven't really heard of the ivermectin working as an oral wormer for mites - I thought it had to be injected to have an effect on the skin.
 
A dectomax injection that you can get from the vets is the best licensed thing for mites on horses.

I give my horse coopers spot on, its a pour on for cattle/sheep/chickens. Its not licensed for horses and you need a holding number to get it but its brilliant. Its similar to the dectomax injection but 20 applications cost £40. Hell of alot cheaper than injections and the bonus is after 2yrs of using it on him he is still alive. Hurray!! I know alot of ppl that use it succesfully but bare in mind its not licensed for horses but then, neither is frontline.

Bexwarren: I think that is what OH has just ordered for his cattle (he said it was a pour on solution) I am nore than happy to use that but unsure of quantities, my chappy is about 400kg, what amount of soultion do you usually use and on what weight horse?

Yeah, pour on soloution, in a yellow box. Um, well, my boy is close to 700kgs so I gave him the amount recommended for a cow, figured they were about the same size. If I were you I would go for somewhere between sheep measurements and cow measurements (cant remember exact figures of the top of my head). I often think though that I dont give enough and if smaller cows can cope with the bigger measure then there is no reason why your horse cant.
