Advice please for my TB’s coat since clipping as very scurfy and mane is dull. Will try bathing but wondered if he needs a supplement or oil in his diet. Normally has lovely shiny coat.

If he normally has a shiny coat, don't worry about changing his feed. I usually hot cloth after clipping in cold weather. A splash of dettol, baby oil and lavender rinse in a bucket of very hot water and a couple of microfiber clothes wrung out well, gets the dirt and scurf out while bringing up the shine.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I did wonder if I should have bathed him afterwards. I’ll try your suggestion today as he is normally very shiny.

I can’t seem to attach any images on here but my girl is glowing.

Personally I hot cloth with a couple capfuls of dettol straight after a clip (preferably bath the day before, coat the coat with show shine pre clip it leaves a nicer finish generally!). Don’t be scared to change water + cloths a few times as it will get full of hair and the newly revealed grease. Then a second hot cloth (I did this after a full groom the next day) with either your preferred oil or this yeah I’ve been hot clothing with a glob of conditioner 2 a week and she’s looks like a mirror straight after being clipped.

Normally I’d suggest feed but if he was shining before his hair cut it’s just he dulled it will come back to its grooming!!

Thanks a lot for your advice. He’s already a lot better since bathing but will now follow your advice.

And grooming, properly, with body brush and curry comb for 20 mins a day. Old school but effective. I almost never wash a horse unless it is grey.

I did mine with fine blades on Sunday. When I finished I brushed her off with 2 Haas brushes, the firm bristled body brush, and then finished with the one with the sheepskin in the middle. I then sprayed some coat shine and some anitbacterial spray and did the lambswool brush again. I hate hot clothing in winter, so this is the cheats way without getting your hands wet!

Shes a steel grey sort of colour clipped so never looks great but it was commented on today that she was gleaming.

It does come from within though, she was shiny pre clip, just dirty and scurfy near the skin post clip!

Thanks a lot. Something else to try!
