I've always just had 'normal' rugs, but I think I am going to sell Dante's heavyweights (which are so far unused... so a bit pointless!) and invest in something that I can change the liners with, if I can get something good.
I still want the option of something warmer if he really needs it, but as it's seeming very unlikely, I'd prefer something that can double up as a lightweight/med weight or whatever really to suit, which will hopefully save a bit of space and a bit of money, and ideally I'll be able to wash the liners at home to save a few more pennies & keep Dan more comfortable :)

His current rugs are all weatherbeeta & amigo, which fit well, so any brands that fit along those lines would be good, or do either of those companies make rugs with changeable liners?

Thanks

I sold most of my rugs to buy a liner system rug. My friend has a PE trio & likes it but as I change her horses rugs a few times a week I've realised it really annoys me! So now got to replace the rugs I sold but not with a liner system. Ho hum, good job I love rug shopping!

I tried Premier Equine ones but wasn't impressed with fit or quality so they went back.

Now I use a lightweight Amigo turnout with the Horseware liners (the new amigos have the loops for the liners) - they're fab, especially as you can get the liners for under £34 if you shop around. I also have a lighweight Amigo stable rug that I use the liners with too so even better value for money.

I have the PE trio and I love it. I also have their 40grm turnout which I can also use the liners in.

These are the only turnouts I have and they have covered every eventualitity as the temperature changes so much here.

At the moment I have my 100grm turnout with my 40grm neck attachment as its quite mild here and didnt want my mare getting too hot with the 100grm neck cover. This way I still keep her clean for later.

I dont find the liners too much of a faff but think that the versitility of them far out weighs the minor hassle.

Also, the liners dont move at all. Im toying with the idea of getting another trio just to have on standby.

My horse has both Rhino and weatherbeeta turnouts and a Rambo stable rug. I have a few Rambo liners which fit in all his rugs perfectly. Obviously the weatherbeeta didn't have the correct rings to attach at the neck but they can easily be added for not very much money.

I've got the PE trio, too. It's seen three winters, and the liners are all in perfect condition (the rug's taken a beating, but perfectly functional still). I've got a horseware liner, too, and can't really see a difference in quality or fit. The horseware one has one chest fastening rather than two, like the PE. That's the only real difference imo.

I use any top rug with the horseware liners as under rugs all of my rugged horses (3 currently). I find the 100g and 200g liners used with a lightweight (no fill or 100g) top rug the most flexible. I am currently using the liners under a Mark Todd turnout, a weatherbeeta turnout and an amigo turnout. Even when I use them with horseware top rugs I don't attach the liner to the top rug they way the intend, ie using the neck attachments, I just do the liner up with the front strap and then clip it on to the rear D rings of the top rug along with the fillet strap of the top rug. I use the liners under stable rugs and turnout rugs, I like the fact that my TB just has his top rug changed in the mornings: stable rug off, turnout rug on over the liner, and he stays warm. Never had an under rug come undone, unattached or slip and I reckon I've been doing this for 6 or 7 years.

Best bit is that you can keep washing the liners throughout the season and at the end of the season there is only one turnout rug to clean and reproof.

Thanks everyone! All sounding quite positive really, I'll take a look at the PE ones & the horseware ones. Has anyone got any comments on the fit of the PE rugs? ie what type of horse they seem to fit best? Or are they fairly flexible?

Another for PE.
Fit wise they are quite deep, and do tend to come up slightly on the large side.

Premier equine :). They come up pretty deep which I like. Ive had mine on everything from chunky ISHs & WBs to TBs, all fit fine. All their rugs are excellent. Make sure to read the points on their website for each rug carefully for the denier and also as the neck combo rugs (or at least some of them) dont have the front attachments for the liners (though they seem to stay put fine anyway just clipped at the back but probably not ideal for a t/o if being used daily!).

I have loads of their different rugs but if I was starting again I would probably buy the Trio, a set of liners and a rainsheet. Reasoning being that between them they would cover all temperatures during wet weather and if for eg your horse did damage the trio you could use the rainsheet with one of the thick liners (and poss the neck off the trio too) to make up a warm enough rug as a temporary replacement :).

My horses have the Rambo Duos. I looked after a horse that had a Premier Equine Trio and would say that between the 2 the Rambo is the better. The PE rug was heavy when wet and the velcro didnt stay "sticky". One of my Duo's is in it's 7th Winter and has been the best rug I have had in 10yrs of horse ownership. Expensive but well worth it when you add up how much it would cost otherwise with heavyweight, medium weight and lightweights being bought separately. I wash rugs as my business and do see a lot of rugs come through, the Rambos win hands down every time!!
