With the horses moving to a new regime of out 24/7/365 I want to review their wardrobes!

I want rugs that won't leak, and keep the warm and dry... what everyone wants really.

I also need to think of a system where I can easily spot whose is whose!

Thanks Guys

Because I own a tank, I have a mix of Ruggles heavy horse and Big Horse Shop rugs - different colour for different weight so it's easy for me or anyone looking after my horse for me to spot which one is needed.

Lots of the yard I'm at have Ruggles rugs - other than the lightweights they are longlasting and tough.

Could you paint names/sizes on the rugs if you end up with lots that are the same colour? (riding school locally does this) Or use tags?

Old Horse's rugs are a mixture of different weights and styles, mostly Horseware, with the odd Weatherbeata thrown in. He's had them for years and, so far, they've kept him warm, cool and fly-free. All quite expensive at the time, but have remained effective and fit for purpose.
When I bought them, they were all British-made. I'm not sure that they are now.

Honestly for the price shires rugs are brilliant! We have the tempest and highlander ones (highlander better if you’ve got a chunky horse) and then are without fail the only rugs I’ve had that don’t leak! The lady who runs our yard always comments that mine are the only dry ones after she takes their rugs off after a deluge 😂☔

They are fabulous rugs! I also love swish rugs for my chunky Welsh, horsewear rhino and Rambo also very good but expensive x

I used to swear by Shires when I had my big geldings. I had a number of Shires combo turnouts that lasted years (decades). I donated them to a local sanctuary after I’d lost both boys as they were still fine. Both my boys were 17hh and broad, and Shires fitted well and never rubbed.

I did make sure they were sent off and professionally repaired, washed and re-proofed at least every other year though.

I also discovered Shieldon (I think) not long before I lost my last horse, they fitted big shoulders nicely but can’t comment on longevity.

My ponies both have Shires, although rarely have them on.

I bought Rambo rugs about 20 years ago which have outlasted the horses and are still going strong on my friends horses.

I now only buy lightweight turnout rugs and 50g and 100g liners so I can wash and reproof in my washing machine. I buy whatever fits as long as it's a really high denier outer, I have Rambo, big horse shop and PE.

Shires and weatherbeeta with liners I don't clean my turnouts either as they stay clean inside if you use liners and snuggy petticoats.

I just brush the outside off as much as possible then spray with fabsil gold at the start of rug wearing and I get a good few years out of them.

I’ve got 2 Rambo optimo no fill turnouts & necks (not much else doesn’t restrict my horses shoulder) and a range of optimo liners. Does cover pretty much any eventuality.

Do also have a few Big Horse Epics that fit but didn’t stay waterproof and a Premier Equine older turnout both with right shoulder dart that comes up high as back up rugs.

Horsewear Rambo’s are the best I’ve used. The rhinos are good too.

I do agree with above poster who said shires are great for the price. If your on a budget then they are a good choice.

I agree Shires are good especially for the price, my only gripe is the pathetic little tail flap
In the weather we've been having I want a good big tail flap so when they park their bums into the wind you know they'll stay dry

Swish have decent tail flaps and are nice rugs generally but are more expensive
They do have sales sometimes

I've been really impressed with two gallop trojan rugs I bought as a budget option. They're a generous cut too.

I bought a gallop Trojan after seeing good reviews here but it’s a terrible fit on mine. It pulls back badly and a horrible fit around the front and shoulders. She is difficult to fit though.

Same experience as me! Shires and swish fit mine much better, I think if they have a decent shoulder gallop don’t really work x
