Want to get my old boy some knee boots for hacking. He has lots of scar tissue on one knee from an old injury and I'd like to protect it should he stumble as I don't think it would heal well again. (he stumbled onto his knees the other night whilst being silly which has made me decide to get some)

What's the best type? I've looked at neoprene, leather, ones that are called skeleton - I don't anything about them...............

How do they not fall down?

Police horses use them so I figure they must be ok................

We have always used leather ones & wouldn't consider neoprene. When you consider the weight & impact of a horse falling to its knees you need to have a substancial covering & padding to protect them from injury. I don't believe neoprene is strong enough & leather is needed. Ours are 'rugging boots' which are leather & they are backed with either a blanket type material or suede.

Jeffries boots are lovely, but they come at an expensive price. There are similar boots available from sellers on ebay & they are perfectly acceptable. They stay on because you buckle them up above the knee, ther knee being wider means they won;'t slip down & there are long bottom straps that are left fairly loose to stop them slapping about but allows the knee to move without restriction.

This is a link to the boots I mean:-

I hope this helps ;)
