Considering that the dog only arrived on Sat afternoon, I can honestly say I'm astonished that the house is already knee deep in dog hair. Don't think the current vacuum cleaner is up to the job and think I need to buy a new one tomo lunchtime before I disappear under a ton of black fur... Why didn't anyone tell me this would happen???

It needs to do carpet, tiled floor and laminate. And I think it needs to be up to some heavy use...

Doggie is getting on fine. He found Adrian (the horse)'s jolly ball this morning & carried it onto the school, & spent the whole time I was riding playing with it by himself & having a great time. No attempt to run off or chase Adrian. He's hardly growling at Justin now, & he's also not following me about so closely. I can make a cup of tea or some toast without him getting up to follow me, although he still has to accompany me to the loo.

He is going to the doggy grooming parlour on Weds for a jolly good scrub & tidy up, & I'm hoping to look on their noticeboard for details of obedience trainers so we can start work on this whole obedience thing.

Dyson (Animal) - excellent. They are expensive but worth it. Think mine was about £300. I have 2 dogs & 3 cats, no carpets downstairs anymore though, get absolutely ruined, tiles & wooden floors all through, much easier cleaned.

I second the Animal. With 3 dogs (2 rotties and a ridgeback) a cat and me traipsing in and out of the yard it does some serious sucking!! For a short coated dog thay lose some serious hair don't they? Glad to hear he is starting to settle in.

I'm looking at the DC23 stowaway animal, but it doesn't say if it's got a hard floor tool? Downstairs is tiled & laminate so I need one. Has anyone got one who could tell me?

Yes I must admit that I naively thought that a short haired dog wouldn't shed. I'm baffled that something which weighs 40kg can lose more hair than something that weighs 620kg...

The next dog might have to be one of those funny things that doesn't grow any hair at all...

I swear my two sit and pull each others hair out while I am out. There is always a mountain of hair and I would love a hoover that is really up to the job! Are those dysons reliable? I have only heard bad things about dysons up until now. Do you have the cylinder or upright animal? I have found the cylinder one in comet for £179 and the upright for £249. Which would you recommend? thank you

The DC20 is the animal. Had an ordinary Dyson before the animal, they all do a good job, they should all come with tools for hard floors, I use my hoover that much my husband says he's gonna bury it with me when I go

Dyson stowaway animal!! Its great, does all my floors even my black carpet comes up a treat (white hairy dog!!) great choice eh!! Its good on my tiled floors too and gets right up to the skirting boards. Def worth the money imo

I have a Pet Vax which is great but I have found it depends on the quality of your carpet. In the Sitting Room we have a wool carpet that hoovers beautifully, in the Dining Room we have a cheap manmade one and OMG I have to go over it again and again to get the hairs up and even then if I rub the carpet with a trainer, rolls of fluff still come up!

We have a normal Dyson and dont think much of it and thats for normal useage, not dog hair.
My friend has 6 dogs, 4 are Labs and she swears by her Henry. They are on Amazon for £80, Im thinking of getting one.

yeah henrys are great or a henryetta (pink version) in which we have. Ravenwood, the pet vax are a waste of money IMO our one gave up after a few months and we have a golden retriver. Get a henry they are the best x

Shame - I have had my Pet Vax for ages - it has been very reliable with the added bonus that you can shampoo your carpets every onece in a while.

As others have said, Dyson Animal; I don't think anything can compare to it where animal fur is concerned. My dogs live outside, however I have 2 cats who are in the house a lot and my Dyson is wonderful at picking up their fluff and fur.

I have solid hardwood floors throughout the whole of my house and the Dyson works great with them.

By the way, I meant to say, congratulations

. He looks like a lovely dog. There are always teething problems with dogs from rescue centres, so try to keep positive and don't be disheartened when you have the odd setback. Things will likely work out perfectly in the end.

Keltic-Krackers--can we swap dogs? I have black dogs and cream carpet.

Seriously though, I really have a problem . At the moment, everytime I turn round I see tumbleweeds of black hair drifting across the floor.
I am using a Mielle cat and dog vacuum but have found that good old elbow grease is best using a rubber hand brush.
It's driving me mad.

Not had the dyson animal, but have had 3 of the normal ones that died within a few months so wouldnt have another

We have a Henry, does a fab job on my cats hair and the various family dogs presents

(range from danes to yorkie and everyhting in between).

We have a Charles which is very good (larger than the Henry and blue rather than red). It a wet and dry so you can use it for washing your carpets. Only thing that is a bit of a pain is the cord isn't retractable - you have to wrap it round it!

You have prob been out and bought something by now, but just wanted to say that we had a dyson (basic one) which is 8 years old now, and still is fantastic. WOrks on both hard floors and carpet.

Good luck with your new 'baby'.

Yes I got a dyson animal yest from Argos - decided to be naughty & not wait for pay day.

Still, it was £50 off.

OMG *what* a vacuum cleaner!!

I've had a good play with all the attachments & for a split second, the house was dog hair free. Don't think I've endeared myself to next door - after over 3 relatively hoover free years, I've now done the whole house 2 days running - properly, moving all the furniture. Then mopped the kitchen again & did the living & dining rooms with one of those floor wipes on the special floor wipe mop thing. Plus washed the dog bed cover which is currently in the dryer. Forgot the muddy foot towel tho.

I am turning into my mum...

How ironic, if the house ends up cleaner with a whacking great dog in it than it ever was without one.

Also, on the poo-or-wee-where-they-shouldn't-omenter between the dog & o/h's kitten, the scores are so far kitten=4 & dog=zero.

i just bought Hetty , (Henrys wee sister) 2 days ago .. and i have to say she is fantastic at picking up the dog hair on carpets and wooden floors... much much better than the 3 previous dysons ive had .

In my recent similar request I posted that I bought a Panasonic upright.
3 or 4 weeks on I can report it is absolutely fantastic. half the price of a Dyson and picks up the dog hair from any surface in my house with no effort from me. Brilliant.

As an aside-who posted my post on page 2? I didn't!

Miele Cat and Dog for me. Gave up with Dysons a long time ago but to be fair I didnt try the Dyson animal. Just got fed up with them giving up the ghost motor wise. Our Miele is well over 2 years old and going strong (touch wood) I will definitely get another one in future. It is the only vacuum cleaner I have ever enjoyed using as it really does seem to get the crap off the carpets and they actually look clean afterwards. The only downside is that they need bags and they dont come cheap.
