George's no fill turnout that I use for wet weather days in the summer is on its last legs, so I was wondering if you could recommend me a replacement. He is shire tb x so fairly chunky and takes a 6ft 6 rug. It needs to be a reasonable price (bit skint at the mo!), especially as it doesn't get used that often. I would prefer a cotton lining but nylon would be ok.

Thanks :)

Weatherbeeta Landa Freestyle! My boy is quite a bit smaller but well built and his has so far taken 3 years of youngster abuse, never leaked and also has a nice cotton lining!

Have a look at Rotchanas link to the Premier Equine new stuff. There's a couple of l.w turnouts there that look quite decent sizes for George. Have bought rugs from them before and they are usually good quality, fab rugs.

I recently got 2 off ebay for my yearlings they are riff raff and very good fit and waterproof. I won them for £17.50 and £17.00 but some people got them even cheaper than that on previous listings.

I have just ordered one from fast tack direct for £23, apparantly down from £60. It got dispatched today so still waiting to see what it's like.

Another vote for the Weatherbeeta Landa Freestyle. Whatever make you decide, if you look around for the less popular colours you may well find that they're cheaper. I had my noble DWxTB in a baby pink and blue rug- but it cost around £20 less than exactly the same rug in a more 'normal' colour.

It does say that is has a waterproof outer and Fast Tack Direct descriptions are usually pretty accurate, as far as my experience goes. Then again, I don't have one of these so can't be sure. :) Someone on another topic had ordered one too I think.

I considered buying one but can't justify more rugs at the moment!

I've normally bought Mark Todd or Fal rugs but last year I needed a no fill rug quickly as all mine were in for washing. I bought an Amigo and its fantastic, my girl is a chunky girl and has huge shoulders and chest and it fits her great.

Literally yesterday I brought a new no fill turnout, I got the landa freestyle light, which I paid £60 for but I know you can get it alot cheaper online.
I already have one but after 6 years of LOADS of use, its needs a bit of repair work! But still going to keep it as a spare. Absolute fab rugs, my girl is a section D so very big chest and weatherbeeta are one of the few rugs that fit her really well.

I also ordered the £23 one from Fast Tack Direct - cannot resist a bargain - will let you know what it is like when it arrives!

Amigo without a doubt - the 1200D if you can stretch to it but I've been really impressed with the 600D too, it's not leaked yet and has had some heavy use. :) Best to buy a size larger than you think you need as they are not deep in the sides but the fit is generally good.

Shires everytime. My new summer stormbreaker arrived in the post this morning. I still have the old one thats 6 years old and in excellent condition, I only bought a new one because it isnt as waterproof as it used to be and I liked the colour. I got it for £30 off ebay.

Last month I bought a shires tempest no fill rug for my yearling, I'm not sure how the fit would be on a large chested horse but it fits my gangly yearling well and so far so good! Not bad for under £25!!!

I had the amigo 600D previously but it got ripped so many times that it's no good anymore (I have to add it is the only rug I have ever owned that has been ripped! My horse is not a rug ripper!) but will add that I also have the Amigo 1200D middleweight (they also do this one in a no fill rug), and I swear by this one, brilliant rug! Just dont' bother with the 600D! Also my friend bought one of these and it leaked!

another vote for weetherbeeta freelanda light, however I had to go up a side to accomodate his 15.2hh x 15.2hh body :D

Toffee is on her 3rd summer with her twenty quid saxon she used to kill a Masta Lite per a year lol .

Looking at the pictures of your chap and my boy (also Gorgeous George) they look very similar in build. Last year I purchased the newer style Weatherbeeta Freestyle (no fill) for both my chaps (the other being a TB).
I find the Freestyle (with the short darts at the front) are really quite short in the chest and only do up on the 1st/2nd holes. Whereas the other style (Weatherbeeta) with the 'gussets' at the side do up nicely on the middle/tight holes and have plenty of room in for them to do their cartwheels when in the field! However, the Freestyle has elastic in the leg straps and D rings for the neck cover.
I personally wouldn’t buy a rug with the short darts at the front of the chest again.

I hope this helps.

Another vote for the Weatherbeeta Landa Freestyle.

I have a 14.3 Section D who takes a 6'3" and although she winters out unrugged, I put hers on last night 'cos it was going to throw it down and I'm riding this morning!

I've had mine three years and it withstands anything - she's had it on in torrential rain and storms and I love it!

I had the new Premier Equine cataloque yesterday (WHY do they need to post it - it MAKES me buy things!!) and they have a Buster Lite Turnout with no filling for £50 which I may buy as a spare (to go with my three other spares).

I've used the 'Shires - Tempest' rugs on my lot, they've been the all-round best, they start at £29.

I used other makes but they rubbed/slipped/leaked/pulled tight. I'd never use any other type again. They fit perfectly, and not one has rubbed or slipped. Waiting for my 6ft one to arrive in stock at the local store. This one was £39.

Horsewear Amigo 1200 Denier i have about 10!! only thrown 1 out for rips but it was about 4yrs old.

ETS never had one leak, and have the necks for the mud lovers!!

Another vote for the Amigo 1200D. Also one of the Shires, I forget what it's called but also 1200D. Both have been pretty waterproof while still reasonably priced.

Axiom. Guy on ebay sells them. inc p&p (which is expensive but it's usually next day) they're under £40. They have a 1800D nofill full neck amoung others. Very good quality - I now have three and they're the only ones that have lasted! The landa has been worn a grand total of three weeks and is already ripped

I have just ordered a saxon lightweight for my mare. Pony already got 1 and am impressed. Value for money. £30.90 inc postage from ebay shop prequestrian.

I also ordered 1 of the bargain rugs from fasttackdirect last week as spare for pony and its a rubbish fit and isn't totally symmetrical. Its a nice rug to look at but its a 5ft and is huge round the neck/shoulders and sits below the shoulder blade 1 side and above the other the side. Not a good quality rug. Unfortunately you cant pick what you get you just hope for th best.
