Best vehicle to tow Bateson Ascot & 2x500kg horses uphill???

i tow equitrek which weighs 1150 ish plus 650 of horse - have towed with jeep cherokee which did brilliantly uphill and now bmw x5 which is even better. Towed small ifor and one horse with freelander which just about coped but not great on hills.

Friend tows with Pajero but that seems underpowered up steep hills - but.. if coud be that it is an older vehicle or that hers is manual and mine automatic which means I am always in the right gear

I towed 2 horses (horses weight 400kg and 550kg) in an ivor williams last weekend with my Mitsubishi Shogun short wheel base 57 plate and it did a brilliant job up a long steep hill. Our car before that was a landrover but didnt think it towed as well as the Mitsubishi

Empty weight of your Ascot trailer is about 1000 so with 2 horses at about 500 each then you are looking to tow around 2000 in actual weight

Manufacturers base their towing capacities (actual weight being towed) on a power to weight ratio on a specific uphill gradient (12.5% I think) so if a vehicle has been deemed a 2000 towing capacity then it SHOULD cope with that easily

Land Rover Discovery or Defender have used both.. but the Mitsubishi Shogun and Pajero I had in Auto wasnt that good...

A question to those using autos and having difficulties -

Are the drivers using the options available so a lower gear can be selected and held?

I have the Bateson Ascot for two 17.2s and tow it with 2 horses with a Daihatsu Fourtrack 2.8 and it has no problem with hills. Unfortunately, they stopped making them about 6/7 years ago but I'll keep going with mine until it disintegrates!

They're basic, noisy and very powerful.
