Any opinions on this?

As my mare is getting on a bit - 20 - I am changing her feed to a veteran mix. Any ideas on the best and most effective one?

I always found 16 plus (which I think is Dodson and Horrell) excellent. My veteran used to do really well in veteran classes and always looked fabby though he was a really good doer anyway. I have also used it on a non-veteran who just really liked the taste.

Another vote for 16+ by D & H, we have had our 23 and 35 year old on it for the last two or three years and they both love it - Leonie the 35year old is acting like a two year old at the moment!! None of our others have mixes mainly high fibre nuts,Kwik Beet and chaff the latter two are also in with our oldies 16+. I think when they are older you have to find the feed that suits them and let them tell you what they need.

Is the mare actually showing signs that she needs her feed changing (ie losing condition) or do you think you should change to a veteran mix just because of her age? If she is doing well on what she is getting at the moment, then it would be better not to change!

tried both 16+ and spillers conditioning veteran mix, jay has lost the plot on the conditioning one so going back to the 16+ lol

I agree with you, my horse is 31 and is on happy hoof and spillers high fibre cubes and unmollassed sugarbeet, he has it because he had lami an few years back but hasn't had it since, touch wood, however he was on a high fibre diet before he got it anyway so nothing's changed really.

I wouldn't change it for the sake of it, it would also depend on how much work the horse is doing etc

what are you feeding at the moment ?
