Hi,

In all these cold temperatures the tub trugs and bin buckets, that I have as water troughs in the field, have shattered and only the half barrels have survived but I'm not sure where to get more barrels from, so what does everyone use for water troughs?

My galvanised troughs are holding up best. I also bought a cheap bath shaped black plastic container off ebay earlier this year, it holds loads of water and has coped well with the low temperatures so far. Have had several trugs split already :(

Plumbers merchants.
Get a round cold water storage tank, no need for lid.
Cheap enough & very light when empty to cart to another paddock

Try one like this: http://www.gwsupplies.co.uk/plumbing/p/5585/25gallon+114ltr+circular+cold+water+cistern+tank.htm

or this http://www.bhl.co.uk/product/TITAN_PC50C_CIRCULAR_TANK_ - a 50 gallon one is much better and with 2 out in a paddock from 6am to 5pm they are getting through about 30% (as well as ice being taken out) over a 7 day period at present, meaning it needs filling only at weekends.

Belfast sinks!

Maybe I'm spoiled, but at auctions over the years I've bought dozens of used Belfast sinks from only a pound or two each. We have two as manger and water trough in a stable and two huge ones out in the paddock I most use. Brilliant, all of them.

Almost impossible to break (I hammer through ice daily in them), a doddle to clean, smooth sided, cheap and better looking than almost anything else. Okay, I will admit I've built mine up on fancy brick plinths, but even on a heap of soil they look great.

We've got loads under stretches of hedgerow too, with a large rock in each so mice can climb out easily. They encourage frogs and toads who in turn eat the slugs that nick all my mushrooms! Plus the dogs drink from them of course.

Old Belfast sinks are officially the new black :)
