I need a new jacket for winter (again)

The jackets i buy seem to always be advertised as waterproof but really arnt once i have worn them a few times so looking for a good one

I am prepared to spend a bit of money on a good one so send me your recommendations =)

My rather expensive Kyra K winter jacket failed the first time it rained but I washed it and reproofed with NikWax and it has been perfect since. I do think non-horsey stuff generally performs better - I have a Marmot Precip which is wonderfully lightweight so I can wear in summer as well as over layers in winter. It's not got a two way zip though, as most non-horsey stuff, so it's not ideal for in the saddle. But I'd wear my full length Musto for hacking or just a windproof fleece for schooling if it was raining anyway.

I keep one like this http://www.hivis.net/23/Site-Equipment/High-Visibility-Economy-Bomber-Jacket/ at the yard & it hasn't yet leaked (tho the odd bit of water down my neck if not wearing a hat or having the hood up) and its done 2 hard winters of wet/ wet rugs/ mud / snow etc.

Use it for riding on too when dark mornings - brilliant jacket & washes well too.

The more posh ones are a Mountain Horse (going into its 2nd winter) and a LW Toggi riding waterproof jacket - both also doing the job, tho the most favourite one for doing everything in is my Hi-Viz :D

edited to add - look for a Dickies one - thats what mine is - bit more robust than some of the other makes (about £22 I think)

I use ski jackets now. Much warmer and better performance for the money than horsey ones. My newest one is from Mountain Warehouse who are very good value. They give a 10% discount off your next purchase so go and buy something cheap first lol!

My dubarry storm jacket has been superb (and smart) - but expensive

but also as a keen cyclist as well i really do recomend the Gore bike wear jackets as they are nice and long in the arm for riding and are really waterproof/windproof without being bulky - good price too for what you get
