Any advice/clever-kind ideas for a horse that is turned out 24/7 that has a very dirty bottom from eating haylage (causing runny tummy). Is it just a case of warm water and shampoo or any other ideas given the weather is so foul to make it more pleasant for the horse? Dont want to endlessly scrub if there is a kinder/bettter solution.

i would stop feeding haylage it the horse has the runs when eating it the horse wont be getting the nutrients from it anyway.

wash gently/ dry gently and coat in vaseline/coat shine, anything that stops the stuff sticking

Warm water and a sponge.

Also, do sort that tummy or you'll be staring into the face of ulcerations pretty soon.

Wash dry well then wipe over area with bady oil or similar you can then sponge off with a damp sponge or towel and it comes off much easier reapply oil as you need to.

Ps. Things to try to cut down the runny tummy, NAF haylage balancer , feeding charcoal or Protexin any of these may help.
Also avoid feeding sugar beet , adding chopped straw to the bucket feed.
Its not necessary and issue these loose droppings ( better a bit loose at this time of year than too hard) it is often just caused by the water content in the haylage which is why avoiding sugar beet can help.

As goldenstar says! Haylage balancer if you intend to keep on haylage.

The runny bottom will be the haylage just running through him due to too much protein for him to handle.

Try redi grass as well to help

As for bottom area! Sudocreme is your friend!

Just like a babys bottom-baby wipes are so easy to use and clean up the area, baby lotion as well. If you are using warm water and a sponge again baby bath is designed to get poo off!

Then pat dry area and you can use baby talc as well to dry area and then smother area with sudocreme.

You can buy supermarkets own brands but check there is no alcohol in the baby products! This will make bottoms and redness worse! If in doubt stick to johnsons!
