Sorry, I tried to search but apparently the word 'hay' can't be included as it's too short

Helpful on a horse forum eh

So, answers on a postcard as to the best way to manage this without making a godawful mess!

you want to feed the whole bale or are you going to split it? if split you may be able to fit it in to pallet crates.
i got mine from buildbase and use them for loose hay off round bales and so far it's working a treat, stops them trampling all over they hay and i can move them around the field when it gets too boggy around them:)

I feed mine in an old plastic fuel tank which has been cut in half. Can just about squeeze in a 4' square bale as in picture, but this year we made 6' bales so feed half a bale at a time. Best thing is as it is plastic it is really light to drag to a new position each time and I know the horses won't be able to hurt themselves should they feel the need to climb in it. been going strong for five winters now!

I found a square bale, upended, worked best, but there was still a mess.

We cut the plastic all the way round about half way up, and then cut the baling twine at the same point. Then heaved like mad and pushed top half over, then dragged it away so we had two halves keeping each half in the plastic.

There was still a mess, but it wasn't as bad as a round one. We just trimmed the plastic as it got eaten down and took it away by the end. The last bit they used as a poo patch and bedding :)

I feed large square bales of haylage in the field. Dump them on their longer, flatter end and cut two long narrow strips out along the top edges. Slice through the string!

There's very little wastage and the added benefit that when the plastic is empty, the foals think it's fun to lift it up in their teeth and flap it (all good bomb-proofing for the future!)

JanetGeorge, I'm probably being a real thicko but I am struggling to visualise how you're doing what you're doing?

Zizz- where on earth did you get that from?!
