Ive been taught to use lots of transitions - ie get them to go right down to almost walk(from trot) and then kick them on and get them snapping away from you and going into a good trot...hope this helps
 
Transitions, transitions, transition, direct and within the paceand half hault and bending, lateral work, lots and lot of schooling figures etc, never go down a side of the school without doing a movement or something!
 
Lunging.. Start by just a headcollar and lunge rope... using the whip not up and down but flicking it around his flank... he will concetrate on moving forwards from it, relaxing through his bum, back, topline and poll. Build up to bridle, saddle and side reins lunging in the same way. Make sure he is working hard to circle. I find its not often I use the whole lunge rope spesh until the horse is much more better. When under the saddle its about always pushing forwards and collecting in your hands. Think your riding toothpaste!! Circles will get him brings his legs under and working forward. Start small and work out. With an open rein. Lots of hault-to-trot-trot-to-hault etc etc....
