Poor Chloe gets very hot because she wasn't clipped over winter (well, she had a trace in September, but it grew through very quickly) despite my best efforts of grooming her with a curry comb etc...there always seems to be exactly the same amount/thickness of hair...

Any good ideas for removing winter coats?

rug up - keep them warm and outta the coat comes- be prepared to do a fair amout of rubber curry combing to shift the winter coat

I rugged my mare at night in her stable and it has really helped the winter coat to fall out, she's becoming all fine and silky smooth now - love it!

Shedding the winter coat is directly related to the amount of daylight the horses is exposed to and something to do with ultra violet light getting to the retina in the horses eye, bit scientific but true.

It wont come out til its good and ready but I find that turning the horse out for as long as you can, naked so it can have a good roll, saves hours of elbow grease!

Turn out naked in this lovely sunshine, preferably with a good friend and let them sunbathe, roll and mutual groom. It will be out in no time.

Im not a fan of rugging them to try and encourage the coat out, what they need is sunshine and daylight not being made to feel hot sweaty and miserable.

If its not coming out quick enough for ridden comfort then at least clip a bit!!

Buy a shedding blade which won't make it come out any quicker, but WILL make her feel much better. I start with the blade, then go over with a rubber massager, then over with a rubber curry. Finally I flick with a flick brush to remove the ast loose hairs. You'll end up with a yard full of fluff, but you'll see the diference.

I must say I would only rug them as a last resort - she absolutely loves it being rugless in the field. She has lots of good friends to hoon around with, so hopefully her summer coat will be in no time

Oh thank you - a shedding blade sounds very useful actually!
