Can I have some advice please? My mare cut her mouth (inside left gum but near where the bit lies) as well as cutting her face (series of small scratches) after having her head in a thorny bush. I had been riding her on a light contact and using sudocream on the mouth for a few days and it seemed to be healing up well. I stopped using the cream and within 48 hours the cut had re-opened and seemed sore again. I've started reapplying the sudo cream again and will give her a few days off but is there anything else I should or could treat it with?

I am concerned that although it is only a very small cut it might get easily infected in the mouth. Any ideas?

Mouth wounds usually heal really quickly - you can squirt saline solution on it with a syringe but to be honest it doesn't last long.

I would be inclined to not ride her with a bit until it is comletley healed - you could use a bitless bridle.

Have you been able to see if there could be a thorn in the wound?
